They are a pain on the street. They don't follow the laws, they don't signal. and they think they are the only ones on the road. The police department has to be on the lookout for such behavior, but they dismiss it as just kids being kids. What will happen when someone dies?

If you form opinions based on a lot of comments on here you would have to assume that people here hate students at KU. Isn't forming an assessment of someone based on the group they belong to called prejudice? I enjoy riding the bus and listening to the different languages

I don't hate students, but the traffic gets markedly worse when they return. The question is do I look forward to the KU students returning. No. I don't. There are more cars on the road, many of them driven by relatively inexperienced drivers who apparently don't believe the traffic laws, the laws of physics, and the universal law of mortality don't apply in their case.

@Gotland Oh, we'd have roads. They would be less traveled and far safer. Do not forget to avoid both Tennessee and Kentucky streets for at least two months after their return.

When I drive slow I usually have a reason. Like slowing down hot-headed attorneys driving 30 mph over the limit. I hope they're still flippin' out when they get in front of the judge.

@autie Well dropping $500 at Payless and Walmart you might as well have spent it in Ottawa or St. Louis for that matter. Very little of that money is going to stay in Lawrence. There are, I might add, other locally owned stores with goods as good or better than for equal cost or a little more which would have been far less crowded and their profits would have stayed here.

They add a lot of energy to town which is great. I also like it when they go home in the spring, they usually need a scrubbing come May.

Just because people get confused and get it wrong doesn't mean that the people writing the newspaper need to get it wrong on purpose. Only reason it's KU is because UK was already taken by Kentucky.

Looking forward to it might be a stretch, but collegians are generally wonderful with their youthful enthusiasm & aspirations. They can't drive worth a hoot, though.

Lawrence has done a really piss poor job of keeping the students in one part of town. If they had done a better job the students and residents would both be much happier. Cue the moron with the stupid segregation comment.

Without students local business would be under severe stress if still in existence. The university is the primary attraction to Lawrence,Kansas.

There is a difference between appreciating the impact of KU on the Lawrence economy and appreciating the calm that exists between classes. Lawrence is basically on par with a spring break tourist town. Instead of an ocean or mountains we have KU. In every spring break tourists town I've ever visited, there is a love hate relationship with the spring breakers. They love their money, they hate their attitudes, behavior and the congestion. One thing most spring break tourist towns much better than Lawrence is planning. The regular working folks shouldn't have to deal with the nonsense that comes along side living with overgrown children.

I voted NO - does that make me a student hater? NO! The question wasn't "do you like KU students" it was "Are you looking forward to their return." The answer is - NO - I am not looking forward to crowds, longer lines, and more cookie-cutter-bleach-blonde-fake-tan-cell-phone-yakking-designer-clothes-wearing co-eds in stores and on the streets. For Gawd's sake - is it a requirement for social inclusion that you all look like Barbies? I do not look forward to sharing streets with those who can't seem to understand that driving is supposed to occupy all of your attention, or at least more of your attention than your cell phone. Not looking forward to more articles about drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and hazing, and not looking forward to worrying about how some of these kids will make it without their parents.
I do like young people, and I'm glad to see them getting their education. (Or one hopes they go to class now and then.) But it's nice to have the peace and quiet in town during the summer. It's a hard adjustment for us all that first month or so.

The town is a lot more fun when the kids are back in town. Brings an level of excitement that is just gone during the summer. Watch out for freshmen drivers though....
