Due to renovation work, the Lawrence Outdoor Aquatic Center will be opening on Monday, June 1, instead of on Memorial Day as previously planned, the city announced on Friday.
As the Journal-World has reported, the outdoor pool at 727 Kentucky St. is undergoing a two-phase renovation project. The first phase is focused on building improvements, including to the locker rooms and main entrance. The second phase, which will begin after this swim season concludes, will renovate the pool area itself.
“The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department appreciates the community’s patience as final improvements are completed at the Outdoor Aquatic Center and looks forward to welcoming everyone back for the summer season,” the city said in a news release.
For those who want to swim before the Outdoor Aquatic Center opens, the city will be offering expanded hours at the Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, from May 25 through May 31. On Memorial Day, May 25, it will be open from 1 to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, May 26, through Friday, May 29, it will be open for lap swimming from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the rest of the facility will be open from 1 to 7:30 p.m.; on Saturday, May 30, lap swimming will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the rest of the facility will be open from 1 to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, May 31, the whole facility will be open from 1 to 6 p.m.
The city’s splash pads, at Lyons Park in North Lawrence and Burroughs Creek Trail and Linear Park in East Lawrence, will be open from noon to 8 p.m. daily starting Tuesday, May 26.
