I'm a little partial to the "yip-yip" aliens.

  2. outtatowntownie (anonymous) says…

I like the yip yips too, but my favorite of all time is Snuffalupagus.

  3. grammaddy (anonymous) says…

    "Animal" rocks. So does Barkley!

  4. RETICENT_IRREVERENT (Ronaldo Ignacio) says…

    PBS watching ninnies...

  5. preebo (anonymous) says…

What about Crazy Larry... the one in the straight jacket - my personal favorite. He was on the show occasionally, but really came into his own in "The Muppets take Manhattan" - 3 year-old daughter loves that one.

  6. local_support (anonymous) says…

If being a PBS watching ninnie is wrong then I don't wanna be right.

Where the heck is Snuffy on this list?

  7. rrussell (Rex Russell) says…

Holy Crap, Can the Questions on the Street get any more inane than "What's your favorite Muppet?". Fine piece of journalism there, LJW. You must be proud.

  8. supertrampofkansas (anonymous) says…

I'm a big Grover fan too. Loveable furry old Grover taught me many things when I was just a wee little laddie. I was known to walk all around the house mimicking Grover's voice wearing a blue cape driving my parents and siblings stark raving mad. Ah childhood innocence. What can I say? Hello everybodeeeeeeeee! It is I, Grover!

  9. snap_pop_no_crackle (anonymous) says…

Fozzie Bear & Rowlf didn't make the cut?
    Bummer :(

  10. mjwgoku (anonymous) says…

    Fozzie Bear. Nuff said.

  11. Pywacket (anonymous) says…

Get over yourself, Rex. Who ever said that the question on the street was supposed to be serious journalism?

Every newspaper in every small to midsized city (and in most big cities, as well) in America has a few "fun" features, ranging from the comic strips to word games to personal interest stories that no one (but you, perhaps) would attempt to wedge into the "serious journalism" shoebox.

The KC Star has been running a caption contest feature for several months now--where they print a funny photo on Friday and let people submit their caption ideas. The next Friday, they print the winners and present the next week's photo. A shattering blow to "serious journalism" or harmless fun that (judging from the number of submitted captions they're getting) readers enjoy and appreciate?

People like to read headline news, political happenings, analytical commentary, etc... but they also like to read about the lighter side of life. Making it interactive adds another dimension to that.

Not every question asked for the OTS feature appeals to me personally, and I think some of them fail to hit the mark (of generating some buzz), but I would never mistake the point of "OTS" to be a serious journalistic effort. It's supposed to be fun. If that perturbs you, stick to the articles about Wall Street.

  12. nbnozzy (anonymous) says…

Where are all the "Ernie" fans? He and Bert are last in votes. Is their fan base dying off?

  13. nbnozzy (anonymous) says…

I agree Pywacket. A good newspaper offers up a variety of subjects. If all I wanted to read was news stories and nothing else, I'd be perusing the NY Times or Drudge Report. I think the LJWorld does a very good job overall. That's why I am on here daily and why this site is my main homepage on my computer.

  14. Pywacket (anonymous) says…

I hear you, nbnozzy. Incidentally, I was one of the few "Ernie" voters. I am not much of a muppet fan, really (not my demographic--I'm still loyal to Captain Kangaroo, Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry...), and really never watched any Sesame St until I had kids of my own. Some of the characters I found downright irritating (sorry, outtatowntownie and local support, but I thought Snuffy was the worst), but there was something appealing and thoughtful about Ernie. I think I would have to throttle Grover if I had to spend 30 minutes with him in real life (does he ever shut up with the baby talk?)...

Haha--it's funny how one person's adorable childhood character is another's annoyingly insufferable irritant.

Don't even get me started on the insipid writing of A.A. Milne... Hate greedy, hedonistic Pooh and the simpering precious writing style of those stories. Always did, so age (of the story & characters or the reader/viewer) doesn't necessarily define how we react to children's stories and characters. It's very subjective, obviously.

The cookie monster... I love cookies... wait... maybe that's why I’m so over weight... I need my therapist.... I’ll just keep telling myself "cookies are a sometime thing"....

  16. supertrampofkansas (anonymous) says…

    For Pywacket:

    It is I! Super Grover!

  17. honeychild (Mel Briscoe) says…

i love grover and want a tshirt w/ him on it!!

Rrussel: "Holy Crap, Can the Questions on the Street get any more inane than “What's your favorite Muppet?”. Fine piece of journalism there, LJW. You must be proud."

You might have noticed the lack of respondants pictured standing On The Street, not to mention the word "Poll" in front of this, and realized that this was not an OTS question, but rather a "poll." You might, having thought or looked rather than just spit out pointless derision, also have noticed that either yesterday or today was the 40th Anniversary of Sesame Street.

Since you did none of those, it seems you just fail. Which is also fine, at least for us.

  19. laughingtokeepfromcrying (anonymous) says…

I voted for Bert. I also like those old guys in the balcony. And Miss Piggy. She's my diva!
Lately, some of their voices grate on my nerves. Seriously, I can't get to the remote fast enough...

  20. happypill4014 (anonymous) says…

I think Bert and Ernie need to offered as a pair - They go together - I voted for Ernie because I couldn't vote for both of them. Bert and Ernie ROCK!!

  21. ohgeeze (anonymous) says…

The Count!!! because he likes to count himself! :-)

  22. Irish (Leslie Swearingen) says…

When I could not get my daughter to go to sleep and I was so sleepy I could cry, we happened to see a segment of Bert and Ernie where Ernie keeps making noise and keeping Bert awake. She turned to me and asked, am I like this. I assured her she was, and it never happened again.
So I say God bless you Sesame Street!

  23. vicblthndr (anonymous) says…

    Definitely "the animal".

  24. Pywacket (anonymous) says…

supertramp~ aaaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhhhhh!! (Sound of running feet, twigs snapping, as Pywacket flees to the peace and solitude of the forest)

Happypill~ Is it true that Bert & Ernie were modeled after the Odd Couple characters? Or just a happy coincidence. I agree--the amusement generated by their interactions is greater than the sum of of their separate activites & comments.

  25. Calliope877 (anonymous) says…

Wasn't there a stupid controversy a while back about Bert and Ernie being gay? Maybe I'm thinking about Teletubbies...

  26. ohjayhawk (anonymous) says…

Py - I don't know whether Bert and Ernie were based on the Odd Couple, but I do know that they were named after two characters from "It's a Wonderful Life" (the cop and the taxi driver).

  27. fuel_for_the_fire (anonymous) says…

Does anyone remember Guy Smiley, the game show host? I'm pretty fond of the Amazing Mumford too.

  28. mom_of_three (anonymous) says…

Miss Piggy, Fozzie and rowlf were not sesame street characters. They were on the Muppet show.

  29. mom_of_three (anonymous) says…

Snuffy was introduced when i was young, and grover was always a favorite.

  30. puddleglum (anonymous) says…

my favorite was the little aliens with the big 'O' mouths....memeber when they were looking through the window and the phone began to ring?
    brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrinnnng!
    helllllooooooooooooooo?
    yup yepyepeypeyep
    no-nononononono.

  31. greenlid79 (anonymous) says…

Anyone remember Forgetful Jones, the cowboy??? Haven't seen him in over a decade. Long gone, but hopefully not Forgotten.

  32. fuel_for_the_fire (anonymous) says…

Then there was Professor Nobel Price....and I remember seeing a tribute to the letter B to the tune of 'Let It Be'. Parents should always watch Sesame Street with their kids, the humor on this show is for adults too.

  33. Pywacket (anonymous) says…

ohjayhawk~ That's right! I have heard that, but I forgot all about it. So they had quite a pedigree.

greenlid79~ I don't recall that character, but as far as cowboys go, I'd take Cowboy Curtis over a dumb ol' muppet any day! Yippie ti yi ay! Ladies, are you with me?

  34. defenestrator (anonymous) says…

    Roosevelt Franklin!

  35. defenestrator (anonymous) says…

    Really? Cookie Monster?
No wonder there are so many fat people in America.

  36. greenlid79 (anonymous) says…

Cowboy Curtis? Pee-Wee Herman show? If that's the guy, hi-larious. Laurence Fishburne with those long curly locks.... That'd be something to keep him humble after such huge hits as The Matrix. Classic stuff!

  37. mekojo (anonymous) says…

Grover: Hello Sir and Welcome to Grover's Taxi.

Fat Blue: Oh no it's you!

Grover: Yes it is I, your furry blue taxi driver. What can I do for you, sir?

Fat Blue: I want to go to the library.

Grover: Oh a very wise choice. The library is a wonderful place with books to read and you can listen to records like, "The Air is Alive with the Sound of Music."

Fat Blue: I know that, let's go.

Grover: You can take home books from the library too, if you bring them back of course.

Fat Blue: I know that's why I'm going there.

Grover: Of couse you could also go to the zoo.

Fat Blue: I don't want to go to the zoo!

Grover: Why? There are lions and tigers there. And the lions go Rrrrroar! And do not forget the monkeys they are so cute, they go "Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh!" And you can buy a balloon there too.

Fat Blue: I don't wanna hear "Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh!" I don't want a balloon, I want to go to the library!

Grover is my fave!! Cute adorable fuzzy and blue!!

  38. denak (anonymous) says…

My two favorites,Snuffalupagus and Fozzie Bear didn't even make the list although I am happy to see other people share my affinity for them.

    Dena:)

  39. jonas_opines (anonymous) says…

Without a choice for Animal, Grover, the Swedish Chef, or those two old hecklers who stay on that balcony, I can't really vote for anything. I guess none of those are really from Sesame Street, though.

Maybe Elmo because his voice actor is like a 6'4" gigantic black dude, which has always struck me as absolutely hilarious.

  40. Pywacket (anonymous) says…

Greenlid~ A friend of mine turned me on to Cowboy Curtis. This was way before he did any of that other stuff. We thought he was hot then--curls and all--and we still like to watch him walk around the Playhouse--especially that rear view as he leaves! ;-)

    Grover---eh.... Kids' stuff.

  41. yankeevet (anonymous) says…

    blah!!!!!! give the count!!

  43. mr_right_wing (anonymous) says…

What about Harry? Where is he now? What happened to him? Did Harry Monster develop a drug problem, or maybe drinking problem and get kicked off 'the street'? Did he want too much money so his contract wasn't renewed? Was he mad that he was left out of 'The Muppet Show' and their various movies? Did he and Kermit have creative differences?

Maybe he got an apartment somewhere with Guy Smiley.....?

  44. autie (anonymous) says…

Why do you spend time on such drivel? With the correct question I would say Gomer. He's got cousins. Ain't none of them stinking socks got no cousins? right? And Ms. L'Piggy is nothing more than a fine loin on my smoker.

  45. topekan7 (anonymous) says…

A lot of these comments are refering to muppets which never appeared on Sesame Street. They are refering to Muppet Show characters. My favorite Sesame Street muppet is Bert with his uni-brow and bottle cap collection. I also like the "phenomena do do do do do" muppets.

  46. coolmarv (anonymous) says…

    John John was my favorite.
