What about Crazy Larry... the one in the straight jacket - my personal favorite. He was on the show occasionally, but really came into his own in "The Muppets take Manhattan" - 3 year-old daughter loves that one.

I'm a big Grover fan too. Loveable furry old Grover taught me many things when I was just a wee little laddie. I was known to walk all around the house mimicking Grover's voice wearing a blue cape driving my parents and siblings stark raving mad. Ah childhood innocence. What can I say? Hello everybodeeeeeeeee! It is I, Grover!

Get over yourself, Rex. Who ever said that the question on the street was supposed to be serious journalism?
Every newspaper in every small to midsized city (and in most big cities, as well) in America has a few "fun" features, ranging from the comic strips to word games to personal interest stories that no one (but you, perhaps) would attempt to wedge into the "serious journalism" shoebox.
The KC Star has been running a caption contest feature for several months now--where they print a funny photo on Friday and let people submit their caption ideas. The next Friday, they print the winners and present the next week's photo. A shattering blow to "serious journalism" or harmless fun that (judging from the number of submitted captions they're getting) readers enjoy and appreciate?
People like to read headline news, political happenings, analytical commentary, etc... but they also like to read about the lighter side of life. Making it interactive adds another dimension to that.
Not every question asked for the OTS feature appeals to me personally, and I think some of them fail to hit the mark (of generating some buzz), but I would never mistake the point of "OTS" to be a serious journalistic effort. It's supposed to be fun. If that perturbs you, stick to the articles about Wall Street.

I agree Pywacket. A good newspaper offers up a variety of subjects. If all I wanted to read was news stories and nothing else, I'd be perusing the NY Times or Drudge Report. I think the LJWorld does a very good job overall. That's why I am on here daily and why this site is my main homepage on my computer.

I hear you, nbnozzy. Incidentally, I was one of the few "Ernie" voters. I am not much of a muppet fan, really (not my demographic--I'm still loyal to Captain Kangaroo, Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry...), and really never watched any Sesame St until I had kids of my own. Some of the characters I found downright irritating (sorry, outtatowntownie and local support, but I thought Snuffy was the worst), but there was something appealing and thoughtful about Ernie. I think I would have to throttle Grover if I had to spend 30 minutes with him in real life (does he ever shut up with the baby talk?)...
Haha--it's funny how one person's adorable childhood character is another's annoyingly insufferable irritant.
Don't even get me started on the insipid writing of A.A. Milne... Hate greedy, hedonistic Pooh and the simpering precious writing style of those stories. Always did, so age (of the story & characters or the reader/viewer) doesn't necessarily define how we react to children's stories and characters. It's very subjective, obviously.

You might have noticed the lack of respondants pictured standing On The Street, not to mention the word "Poll" in front of this, and realized that this was not an OTS question, but rather a "poll." You might, having thought or looked rather than just spit out pointless derision, also have noticed that either yesterday or today was the 40th Anniversary of Sesame Street.
Since you did none of those, it seems you just fail. Which is also fine, at least for us.

When I could not get my daughter to go to sleep and I was so sleepy I could cry, we happened to see a segment of Bert and Ernie where Ernie keeps making noise and keeping Bert awake. She turned to me and asked, am I like this. I assured her she was, and it never happened again.
So I say God bless you Sesame Street!

Happypill~ Is it true that Bert & Ernie were modeled after the Odd Couple characters? Or just a happy coincidence. I agree--the amusement generated by their interactions is greater than the sum of of their separate activites & comments.

Py - I don't know whether Bert and Ernie were based on the Odd Couple, but I do know that they were named after two characters from "It's a Wonderful Life" (the cop and the taxi driver).

Then there was Professor Nobel Price....and I remember seeing a tribute to the letter B to the tune of 'Let It Be'. Parents should always watch Sesame Street with their kids, the humor on this show is for adults too.

Without a choice for Animal, Grover, the Swedish Chef, or those two old hecklers who stay on that balcony, I can't really vote for anything. I guess none of those are really from Sesame Street, though.
Maybe Elmo because his voice actor is like a 6'4" gigantic black dude, which has always struck me as absolutely hilarious.

Greenlid~ A friend of mine turned me on to Cowboy Curtis. This was way before he did any of that other stuff. We thought he was hot then--curls and all--and we still like to watch him walk around the Playhouse--especially that rear view as he leaves! ;-)

What about Harry? Where is he now? What happened to him? Did Harry Monster develop a drug problem, or maybe drinking problem and get kicked off 'the street'? Did he want too much money so his contract wasn't renewed? Was he mad that he was left out of 'The Muppet Show' and their various movies? Did he and Kermit have creative differences?
Maybe he got an apartment somewhere with Guy Smiley.....?

A lot of these comments are refering to muppets which never appeared on Sesame Street. They are refering to Muppet Show characters. My favorite Sesame Street muppet is Bert with his uni-brow and bottle cap collection. I also like the "phenomena do do do do do" muppets.
