Rediculous, How often does something like this really happen? True, deterioration was underestimated in the Minnesota case but come on people, life is not safe. Do you really worry every time you drive over a Kansas bridge that it may collapse? Give me a break.
This is getting to be like a shark attack. "Shark attacks 1 of the 50,000 people in the water along the Carolina coast... we must stay out of the ocean and kill all sharks!" The bridge collapse was tragic, but don't expect to happen to every bridge that you drive across.
Just two of the rules of life:
-- You can't protect everyone from everything (no matter what the liberals think).
-- Nothing man-made will last forever.
So this is where the rational thinkers are posting! :-)
I concur. Events that are rare but prominently displayed (they are fantastic and covered by the media all day everyday in their wake) stand out even though they are statistically rare. Yes, the bridge collapse was tragic, but Buddha is right, life has risks and we can never eliminate all or even most of them (nor would we want to if you really think about it!). The only bridges I fear going across are those rickety old rope and wood slat bridges spanning the Amazon River. Just my luck, I rarely cross one of those...especially in my car.
So now I'm adding a life jacket to the survival equipment I keep on the back seat of my car.
Indeed, bridge collapses don't happen very often so why obsess about them. Foreign terrorists don't strike here very often, so why have we spent billions of dollars fighting (and losing) half way around the world? And why, if one fruitloop tried setting his shoestrings on fire on a trans-Atlantic flight, do we still have to have our shoes x-rayed at the airport? Behold the logic of the 21st-century American state!
Not really a liberal/conservative issue there, Buddha.
I'm a raging liberal, my mother and sister hard core conservative. Guarantee you I will have to talk them down on this one. Right now, they're planning their routes to and from work, the grocery store, etc. to avoid all bridges.
Not everything divides along political lines. But nice attempt to get a flame war going so early in the morning. Gotta love that.
have an irrational fear of bridges anyway so this question is irrelevent.
snap, do not think that would help. some of those cars are under a big metal and cement slab, yuck and sad and just to much for my brain to imagine, so a life jacket would not have hleped them in this horrible accident.
My car has a button that converts it to a submarine. I'm like 007, only less cool, because I don't have that many suits.
I'm scared of heighth, even a two-step ladder or a kitchen chair. Spiders, snakes, mice don't bother me. Oh, I can climb, but I can't get down.
I love bridges. Looking over the awesome view pretending to fly. Fear allows limitations.
You've done a great job in scaring the heck out of people once again. So now we have to be afraid:
My prayers go out the victims in Minnesota
I'm afraid of meeting a bear on a bridge while talking on my cell phone.
Hey, Snap-Pop, I'm afraid of meeting you (or anyone) on the highway while you're talking on the cell phone. After several near-hits, I wish everyone would hang up and drive. If you want to talk, pull over.
i've always been terrified of bridges.. so of course i dont feel safe on ANY bridge.. but thats just me
Oh my I forgot about mad cow and bird flu. I guess I'll be in my basement for another 20 yrs. Bye bye everyone. At least I got some duck-tape and 5.mil plastic for the windows
& watch out for the pumas.
There are a few county bridges on the watch list. You notice one off K-10 that is being dealt with as we speak. The Perry Bridge is being rehabilitated. Now if only we can get the powers that be to pay attention to current infrastructure instead of waiting till repair costs jump considerably higher or a catastrophic incident happens. County commissioners have been advised so it is in their ballpark.
Maintain existing infrastructure before taking on additional new infrastructure. The Minnesota bridge was 40 years old.
I do not feel safe on any bridge. Thank You, Lynn
Cell phones users and risk taking drivers scare me more than bridges. I used to warn oncoming traffic if I saw a police car. Now I kinda hope they get a ticket.
Don't give up your day job. Your attempt at irony or satire ain't cuttin' it.
faceit: It's funny, I scrolled down three pages of his profile and only found one post, this one, that could be deemed insulting. I then scrolled down yours and found this on the first page.
"faceit (Anonymous) says:
crazyks, please don't have children."
Just thought I'd put that out there. I'll proceed to stop meddling now.
Armadillos can sense vibrations through their feet. When I approach a questionable bridge, I send out a scout 'diller. If he walks calmly across the bridge, I know it it safe.
My wife and car have been missing for a few days. I sure hope the car is all right.
Have never been a big fan of bridges anyway, so this tragedy in Minnesota doesn't help.
