Possible sizes of carts on display at City Hall Thursday as part of a public comment session about a draft to overhaul the city's trash and recycling services. Two dozen Lawrence residents addressed the city's Solid Waste Task Force Thursday. Another meeting is set for 6 p.m., Jan. 26, location to be announced.

Boyle, like many of the two dozen who commented Thursday, said he would like residents to be able to choose whether they want to pay extra for recycle. Under the draft proposal, all residents would be charge a recycling fee even if they don't use the service.
Ruth Perry, 100, of rural Baldwin City, grew up on an isolated ranch in Wyoming. She eventually came to northeastern Kansas, where she was a longtime teacher. Recently she rebuilt a home that was lost to U.S. Highway 59 construction.

Consultant Arthur Laffer enters legislative committee room on Thursday to tout Gov. Sam Brownback's tax plan. Behind Laffer is Kansas Department of Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan. Laffer is being paid $75,000 by the Brownback administration to help with the tax proposal.
McLouth resident Sherry Leftwich works on creating a card Thursday, Jan. 25, 2012, in her art studio. Leftwich, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2006, says the artwork helps relieve the symptoms of her disease.

Leftwich holds up a couple of cards that she's created. Each card also contains a verse that she has written.
This is one of hundreds of cards that McLouth resident Sherry Leftwich has created. She sells the cards and all of the proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society or Parkinson's disease research at Kansas University. She uses a variety of items to make the cards including old post cards, yarn, scrapbook paper and magazines. She enjoys making good use of old stuff.
Ashley Urban puts together care packages of food items for soldiers on deployment at her home in Lawrence. Urban, whose husband, Cpt. Joshua Urban, is in the Kansas National Guard and often away on deployment, is seeking to start a support group for military families in Lawrence. At right is Urban's 20-month-old son, Kole.

Delta Kappa Gamma, the professional educator’s group, honored three of its members at its 70th anniversary luncheon on Oct. 29 for their longtime service and membership. Recognized for 64 years of membership was Marjorie Smith, seated, who was initiated in 1947. She is pictured with Cathey Parsons, center, president of the Delta Kappa Gamma Omicron Chapter in Lawrence, and Georgia Klein, Phi State representative. Cynda Carr took the photo, which was submitted by Parsons.
