Southwest gains title on final play
October 19, 2007
On a sloppy field and with a cold rain falling the junior high city championship was decided fittingly, in perfect football weather on the final play of the game as Southwest’s Trevor Leslie and Preston Schenck corralled South’s Jon Pederson two yards short of a tying touchdown. The defensive stop gave Southwest a 34-28 victory over South in overtime to secure its third-straight city title Thursday at Lawrence High.

Southwest takes title, concludes 18-0 season

Southwest Junior High completed an undefeated ninth-grade boys basketball season with a 60-53 victory over Overland Park Aquinas on Thursday in the championship game of the Warhawk Invitational.
South wins city wrestling title

The South Junior High wrestling team won the city championship Dec. 10 at Central Junior High. It was the third straight title for the Cougars and 26th in the school’s history. “It was ultra-exciting,” South coach Randy Streeter said. “We had a lot of guys step up when we needed them.”

The Southwest Bulldog eighth-grade girls basketball team welcomed Washburn Rural on Monday to Southwest Junior High for its second game of the season. Despite falling behind early, the Bulldogs rallied in their home opener for 24-21 victory.

The South Junior High eighth-grade football team took home the city championship with a 26-12 victory over previously undefeated Southwest on Tuesday at Youth Sports Inc.

In some cases, students can find the combination of increased homework, more difficult subjects, and higher expectations discouraging, especially when the first sign of tests roll around. However, Southwest Junior High’s freshman football team and its coach Skip Bennett have a different view on balancing sports with their academics.

The South Cougars freshman football team traveled to West on Thursday for the next-to-last game of the year for both teams. The Cougars jumped out early on the home team and never looked back as they came away with a 30-0 victory.

The Southwest Bulldog eighth-grade football team remained undefeated Tuesday with a 44-6 win over Central at Central Junior High.

Tonight, Southwest Junior High will face off against Overland Park Aquinas in a match-up of two of the area’s premier freshman volleyball teams. The Bulldogs have racked up nearly 20 victories this season, and Aquinas boasts players who have played on national club teams.
