A woman who was involved in a standoff with Lawrence police in April 2025 has been convicted by a Douglas County jury of firing on officers.
The jury found Gina Marie Cabanas guilty of seven counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and one count of criminal discharge of a firearm after a three-day jury trial in Douglas County District Court, according to a news release from the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday.
Cabanas was arrested at 3003 Bainbridge Circle in Lawrence on the evening of April 23, 2025, after the standoff. She fired several shots during the standoff, and communication with her was sporadic, Lawrence police told the Journal-World at the time.
Police had responded to the scene after hearing reports that a woman was inside the home with a gun and was threatening to harm herself. They continued to try to communicate with Cabanas after she fired shots. Ultimately, Cabanas emerged from the home and continue to make threats. Police then fired a nonlethal round of ammunition — described as a foam-tipped bullet — at Cabanas, which disabled her to the point that she could be detained.
“Our office is committed to holding people accountable when a firearm is used to threaten others and our law enforcement officers,” Douglas County District Attorney Dakota Loomis said in the release. “The officers involved should be commended for their professionalism, restraint, and commitment to resolving this dangerous incident peacefully. We are grateful for their service and for the jury’s careful consideration of the evidence presented during trial.”
Cabanas hasn’t yet been sentenced in the case, but is due back in court July 8.
