The Free State Brewery opened in 1989 as the first legal brewery to operate in Kansas in over 100 years. We have established a reputation for adventurous flavors in our beers and our food as well as for unbeatable customer service.
Like KU basketball, love for Free State is nearly universal in Lawrence. The in-house brews are among the best in the Midwest, with six or more $3.50 pint offerings ranging from its Wheat State Golden to Oatmeal Stout. With a new brewery open off Moodie Road in East Lawrence, the restaurant has slowly been rolling out a greater number of seasonal beers. On Mondays, select beer pints are available for $1.75.
Likewise Free State's food is choice and inexpensive. The menu is loaded with a dozen-plus town favorites (Black Bean Quesadillas, Basil Ciabatta, Garden Burger, etc), as well as two or more daily specials. The environment is sharp but casual, busy but friendly.
At 10 p.m., the kitchen closes and cold sandwiches, sides and salads are available.
