The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are governed and directed by volunteers and are consistent with its Congressional Charter and the principles of the International Red Cross. Since 1916, the Douglas County Chapter is a local arm of this world wide organization meeting the emergency health needs of the communities of Lawrence, Eudora, Baldwin City, and Lecompton.

In addition to meeting the emergency needs of disaster victims, the nations largest humanitarian organization has programs to ensure an adequate and safe blood supply as well as teach communities important lifesaving skills such as CPR and First Aid.
