Wendy and James Traul were hoping a loan through the Efficiency Kansas program would allow them to upgrade from a 1940s style heater and make the home safer for their children. They are among the 129 homeowners whose applications have gone unfunded.

Prison garden project

Thomas Sheldrake, a spokesman for the Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary, discusses the prison's two-year-old gardening project. This year, the program is expected to donate more than 200,000 pounds of food to food banks around the area, including several shipments to the the Just Food food bank in Lawrence. All of the equipment and supplies are donated by community members, and the project uses no prison funds to operate.

Homeless families keep their children in school.

As many as 15 families are living at the Lawrence Community Shelter, and that means children from 15 families have to try and get ready for school every morning in the same small space. But they're doing it.
