About 70 people received free dental care Friday at Douglas County Dental Day thank to 27 volunteers, including eight dentists. Some of those seeking the free service showed up at midnight to wait.

Fraternity suspended during investigation
Phi Gamma Delta fraternity on the KU campus is under temporary suspension while an investigation into a hazing incident is completed. The incident has one member still being treated at a Kansas area hospital.

Cause of MagnaGro deaths determined
The cause of two deaths at MagnaGro has been determined to be asphyxiation. The incident occurred back in April of this year.

Football game cell reception to improve
Verizon plans to have a truck stationed outside Memorial Stadium to serve as a mobile cell tower. The truck should help improve signal for cell phone owners during games.

Local police earn honors for actions
Two Lawrence police officers were honored with awards stemming from their actions in two separate incidents. The awards were presented at a graduation ceremony Friday.

Woman pulled from Kansas River dam
A woman was pulled from underneath a concrete platform under the Kansas River dam Friday. The woman appeared disoriented and was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Man charged for soliciting children
A 32-year-old man was charged with soliciting children on an area school playground. The incident occurred Monday and children informed faculty of the situation.

Children in a program at Pinckney Elementary say they were approached by a man earlier this week. The incident is being investigated by local police.

Theater opens new season with new show
The Lawrence Community Theater, now known as Theatre Lawrence, opened its newest season with a new show. The show features songs and themes from the 60s.

Firebird football cruises in victory
The Firebirds beat up on Shawnee Mission North on the road Friday. Free State improved to 3-1 on the season with a 46-7 mauling.

Lawrence High lost a nail biter on the road against Shawnee Mission Northwest Friday. The Lions missed a field goal late that would have tied the game. Instead, they dropped to 2-2 with the 23-20 loss.

Eudora football claims hard-fought victory
The Cardinals improved to 3-1 on the season Friday with a victory against De Soto. Eudora won the game 22-7.

Veritas football remains undefeated
Veritas ran all over their opponents Friday in a 56-6 victory. The Eagles improved to 3-0 on the year.

KU football not overlooking opponent
Kansas will face the easiest opponent of its remaining schedule Saturday when it takes on New Mexico State University at home. The Jayhawks will look to get things back on track after dropping their first away game of the season.

KU's Withey out with broken foot
KU sophomore Jeff Withey will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken foot. Coach Bill Self said the injured occurred during individual practices.

Selby still not cleared to play
Josh Selby has been cleared to enroll in classes, attend them and practice with the team, but he still has not been cleared to play. The NCAA is continuing an investigation into his eligibility.
