Plan in works for fairground upgrades
Plans for new amenities for the Douglas County fairgrounds are in the works. A new pavilion is included in the plans, which was presented to Douglas County commissioners Wednesday.

Dianna Nelson, a Lawrence cancer survivor, serves on the planning committee for Relay For Life of Douglas County. Since battling cancer twice, she has devoted much of her time to helping others.

Crews respond to local house fire
Emergency crews responded to a house fire Wednesday in the 2000 block of Quail Creek Drive. No one was injured during the incident and a cause has not yet been determined.

Storm causes power outages, tornadoes
A storm system that moved through Kansas Wednesday caused more than 1,300 Westar Energy customers in Douglas County to lose power. The storm system also reportedly produced two tornadoes during the day.

Emergency Management prepares for storms
Douglas County's Emergency Management Center was busy preparing for severe weather Wednesday. The center used trained weather spotters and computers to track the weather as it moved into the area.

Parkinson says budget a success
Gov. Mark Parkinson said Wednesday that the proposed state budget is a success. The new budget requires a raise in taxes to help balance it.

Kansas Marathon raises record funds
The 2010 Kansas Marathon event raised $52,000 for the Health Care Access Clinic. The amount is the most ever raised and plans for next year's event are already in the works.

Local baseball duel postponed again
The weather simply hasn't cooperated the last few days for the baseball teams from Lawrence and Free State high schools. The newly scheduled games will begin on Thursday if the weather allows.

The Jayhawks made up some ground in the Big 12 baseball standings after sweeping rival Missouri. Kansas has a chance to get as high as second in the conference by the end of the regular season.

Lawrence Invitational golf champ crowned
Shawnee Mission Northwest claimed the top spot in the 2010 Lawrence Invitational golf tournament held at Alvamar. LHS finished in 8th and FSHS in 13th.

State returns record amount in unclaimed property
The state has returned a record amount of unclaimed property so far this year. Treasury staff members were in Lawrence Wednesday helping residents check if they had unclaimed property.

Man arrested after jumping in woman's car
A Lawrence man was arrested late Tuesday night after jumping into a car with a woman he didn't know. The man also grabbed the woman around the neck after he refused to get out of the vehicle.
