Summer heat dangerous for area pets

The number of animal cruelty calls has been on the rise in June, with a majority of those calls coming when people leaving their pets in cars during the day. Local ordinances state you can't leave your pets in a vehicle when the temperature is higher than 80 degrees.

Lawrence youth takes second in Braille contest

Lawrence youth Luther Fuller took home a second place finish in the National Braille Challenge held during the weekend. Luther placed second in his age group at the contest and was awarded a $1,000 savings bond.

Housing authority to ban smoking

Residents of properties owned by the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority will not be allowed to smoke inside the buildings starting January 1, 2011. A survey of property residents showed 70 percent supported the decision.

Debate for lighted path may reopen

After a recent rape was reported on the Kansas University campus, discussion has begun whether to reopen the debate that could bring more lighting to a path from the campus to downtown Lawrence. Since 2000 there have been 22 reported rape cases.

Baker tuition on the rise

The tuition for students attending Baker University is expected to rise 5.5 percent for next year. Students who attend Baker usually graduate in four years and generally graduate with about $1,000 less debt than those who attend state universities.

School district administrators are proposing a property tax hike to help avoid further school cuts. The additional tax would be necessary because of lower property values.

Seat belt ticketing beginning Wednesday

Officers will begin writing tickets to drivers who are not wearing their seat belts on Wednesday. The fine is $5 and can be given for any occupant who is not buckled up.

KU lagging in retention, graduation rates

Kansas University is near the bottom of the Big 12 Conference for both student retention and graduation rates. Only 80 percent of freshman students return for their sophomore year and only 60 percent of students graduate in six years.
