New students learn KU traditions
Thousands of new Jayhawks began learning the traditions that will help shape their college experiences on the hill. More than 3,000 students packed Memorial Stadium for the annual Traditions Night.

Young students get start at new school
Four and five-year-olds were in their new classrooms at Kennedy Elementary Monday. The new classrooms were part of the plan made when an area early childhood center was closed.

The Mount Oread Scholars, freshman students at KU, made the walk up the hill to signify the beginning of their college careers Monday. The scholars program is in it's 60th year.

One injured in trench collapse
One man was flown to an area hospital Monday after a trench he was working in collapsed, pinning him temporarily. A condition update for the man was not available Monday evening, but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Cause of Ohio Street fire determined
The fire that broke out at an Ohio Street residence was caused by clothing left near a lamp. The fire caused about $75,000 of damage.

Man reports armed robbery at residence
A man who was temporarily living at a residence in the 500 block of Eldridge Street reported being the victim of an armed robbery Monday morning. The man did not receive any serious injuries during the incident.

KDHE fixing costly hard drive problem
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is working to fix problems that caused errors with 85 percent of its hard drives. The fix will cost about $700,000.

Record number of Kansans using seat belts
A record number of Kansas drivers have been using their seat belts during the past year. A study has shown more then 80 percent of Kansas drivers are wearing the safety devices.

KU football working on defensive speed
After a 2009 season where KU ranked near the bottom of the conference in defensive statistics, Coach Turner Gill is focused on increasing the team's overall defensive speed. The team has also switched from two-a-day practices to one per day as classes are set to begin.

Jayhawk named to preseason watch list
KU Junior Tim Biere was named to a national preseason watch list that honors the top tight ends in the nation. Biere is one of 32 players in the country to earn the preseason honor.

Students are returning to area high schools and so are high school sports. Every area high school began practices for the fall season Monday.
