There were several articles last year decrying the use of reusable totes. They were believed to harbor bacteria and contaminate food, thus causing food poisoning.

I love my reusable bags. I thought they'd be a hassle, but they are not. Each bag holds a lot of groceries, and is easy to carry.

those totes are great for old ladies and hippy chicks. It's not going to catch on with men (unless they also happen to drive a Prius).

AreUNorml, wait until they start charging a tax on plastic bags (like in some urban areas, D.C. for example). You will see plenty of men carrying/using them.

okay, i have resusable bags and use them about 50% of the time... i know that's lame but i still end up using plastic the other 50%. :(

I reuse the plastic bags, which creates a delimma, because I ask for the nickel off and the twenty something clerks look at me like I am from mars.

I wear t-shirts and jeans until they literally fall off my body. I wear shoes until the soles come apart. I've been using the same leatherbound notebook, now held together by duct tape, for the last 20 years. I've been drinking water out of the same Nalgene bottle, and taking my coffee to work in the same thermos, for the last decade. My favorite movie is a Clint Eastwood movie that I've seen at least 20 times. When stuff breaks, I fix it instead of buying something new, if at all possible.
I'm a man, and I use reusable tote bags. There's nothing more manly than something you can use over and over and over again.

Personally, I like the ALDI model. Throw it in the other cart. Wheel it to the car. Put stuff in milk crates/Rubbermaid totes in the car. Take milk crates into house. No bag necessary at any step of the process. No having to remember to bring empty bags into the store with you.

that sounds like a good idea, average. I do hate plastic bags, especially the really cheap ones. anyone have a tote with a hard bottom, that will stand up by itself?

Double-bagged plastic inside of paper really locks in the freshness and keeps the groceries at the proper temperature. On the hottest days of summer, a second paper bag is good for some added protection from the heat.

I use tote bags that are machine-washable, which reduces the contamination problem. I also carefully wash my vegetables, etc.
Some cities are proposing a plastic bag tax. I would support this, because it would force people to either pay up or become environmentally responsible.

Yes, I have one from aldis that has a cardboardish bottom that stands on it's own. It's HUGE. It can carry at least 4 plastic bags worth of groceries.
That being said... I hate baggers that put only one or two things in a bag when I know i can stuff way more in there. (i'm not talking about bread.. but a bag just for my two bottles of shampoo?? what? It'll fit in with the trashbags, etc...) That's why I use my own bags at aldis, checkers and walmart. I bag my own stuff so i'm not making tons of trips back and forth from the car to the house.

I am not gay, just very happy most of the time.But if someone wants to be gay? then it would not be something they fear, correct?

Doesn't diversity teach about accepting indivualism?
Or is peer pressure still an acceptable form of making people confirm to what the minority want them to be?

I have about a dozen of those little bags and I love them. But honestly, half the time I forget to bring them. So, when that happens, I generally use plastic.

You're in Lawrence freaking Kansas. Look around you. Exactly no one cares if your bags, clothes, or anything else are ironed. Nobody else's is.
If you're the sort of person who irons your shopping bags, worries about a few dandelions in yards, washes your car on a weekly basis, etc, this town must drive you absolutely bonkers.

Quite the opposite. Just like you and AreUNormal, I have friends and family who are gay. My statement was to excoriate RUN's posting. First off, his premise is just wrong in that I see plenty of men using re-useable shopping bags. I suspect what he meant is that REAL men won't use them. Usually, when people get to talking like that (or being threatened by imagined pink uniforms, say) it implies that that person has insecurities as to their own manliness. Real men aren't homophobic and some of them are even gay.

Ok I don't mind people bringing their own bags, but can you give them to the bagger first or bag them yourselves? Nothing worse than standing behind someone with their own bags and then they dig them out of their backpacks at the last minute.

I remember the locally owned grocery when I was a young one. The stock boys always saved the boxes after stocking the shelves and brought them to the checkout lane. The choice wasn't paper or plastic. It was box or sack. Of course we took the boxes. The boxes provided hours of fun; add some imagination, and a box becomes a garage, house, army base, and the list goes on. The children of the sixties knew what recycling cardboard was about.

My canvas totes hold a lot more groceries and are much stronger than plastic, plus they are machine-washable. I ask for paper when we are low on paper bags because we put our recyclable paper in those. We also use plastic for small amounts of trash. I was using my canvas totes before they became "trendy."

Often we keep a large cooler in the car. Then haul our groceries out in the cart and load up the cooler.
Sometimes groceries just go on the seat.

My wife likes canvas bags which is the best way to go over plastic and paper. The cooler can hold wayyyyyyyyy more plus the produce likes a cooler as do refrigerated goods.

plastic is better it blows away faster and down the storm sewer, plus when woven they make nice place mats.
How come those folks at the drop in center can't make some place mats from plastic bags? They would be nice for picnics and Chamber of Commerce mixers on the dining tables.

i'm still using plastic bags. then sometimes i use paper bags. never have i bought a tote bag. when i get to many plastic bags i put them in the plastic bag barrel at hyvee. i have never collected too many paper bags. never have i bought a tote bag!!!
