I'm with Jean1183 on this one....on the LJWorld voting yes will make people automatically think you voted for the big "O". Many don't realize most of the really offensive liberal people who post on here, don't even live in or near Lawrence. More conservatives in Lawrence than many realize.

In February of 2008, I stood with the 80 percent of Democrats
at our local caucus who supported
Barack Obama for the nomination. In November of 2008, I
joined half a million Kansans and more than 66 million
Americans who voted President Obama into office.

Today I applaud the work he has done in his first year as our
nation's leader. Of course, I don't agree with every decision
he has made or every direction in which he has chosen to
devote his attention. But he is one heck of a cool operator,
and some important differences are becoming evident in
the way our country faces challenges at home and abroad.

Do we have any doubt who is the commander in chief of the
United States? Our military leaders are expressing their
views and providing their data, but the President is in
charge of determining when, where, and how to utilize
our armed forces intelligently. Has our image changed
among the other nations of the world? America won the
Nobel Peace Prize this year.

Are our economic priorities changing? Congress,
in concert with the administration,
is moving swiftly to save our economy by enacting
responsible health care reform as well as laws to
stimulate green initiatives and support a new era of
growth with a solid infrastructure of faster, safer
transportation and more responsible banking
mechanisms.

Is it hard to make these changes?
Just listen to all the media noise and extreme
rhetoric in favor of the status quo. Read the accounts
of how complex a duty it is in 2009 to protect President
Obama against death threats from homegrown
American terrorists. And, in the midst of all these
criticisms and challenges, observe the calm grace
of the first politician in many years who truly
respects his political opponents.

I am glad that I voted for the first U.S. president
who understands the need to reinterpret and refresh our
democracy in the new context of the 21st century.

RiverCityConservative, you really should change your name. Quite the misnomer.

I had no good feelings toward him on election day, but thought that he just made empty campaign promises so I started to feel better. Then the stimulus bill passed, and now a huge, pork-filled healthcare bill is up for a vote and Cap and Trade is only very close to passing. I feel even worse about him and the future of this country....to the point where I question whether I should have children. And the one promise I hoped he would keep, transparency, his administration is much, much worse than that of W's.

I have four children and am relieved that intelligence and grace are finally back in the White House. This is the leadership we need for a new century and all the challenges we face, many of these direct results of the eight years of bumbling and bravado of the guy who slipped into office on a Supreme Court vote and stayed in with ballot tricks. Love the comments about Lawrence being conservative. Good luck with that campaign. Look at how the Republican party self destructed in NY's 23rd district. That is going to be replicated nationwide in the midterms. Yes, I am conservative, but the wildeyed zealots on the right are not.

The republican party are masters at putting millions upon millions upon millions of people out of work.

All they do with a remarkable degree of consistency is wreck the economy,initiate huge movements of shipping jobs abroad aka the Reagan-Bush Global Economy and try to wreck social security and medicare.

Unfortunately grammaddy your comment is counter productive for Republicans. If they pitch in and help they have no foundation for their complaints. The only way for them to succeed is to see that society is worse off with the Dems in power. So they complain, criticize and reject anything Obama puts forth, whether it is beneficial to us or not.

Where is Obama's inexperience? Not really with issues, but handling politics. He's not experience handling politics, though he's better with facts, and reading situation under no-attack situations. He understands the agenda and what are needed for this country urgently, but he doesn't understand the attacks coming from everywhere. He's learning... and he's learning fast. But not fast enough. Give him 1-2 more years, I'm sure he can handle the GOP and Democrats really well.... by then, he'll become the same usual politicians....

America got the Nobel Prize? You get a prize for apologizing and talking to people who in the past/present and most likely in the future who lie, cheat and steal from their own people without conditions. When has it ever been okay to side against the Jewish people and Israel when they are in a fight for survival surrounded by multiple countries who have throughout history wanted to make them a parking lot. Why is it okay to purchase homes you can not afford, buy a new ipod/dvd system/new gaming system/big screen TV all on credit every time they come out with a new model and create a huge personal debt you have to file bankruptcy. Why is it okay for a bank to buy up a bunch of debt that will compound until it creates a crisis on the chance they will still turn a profit when they sell it to some other sap.

We are just as much to blame for some of these problems as the president but the whole party system is in shambles anyway because you have people claiming to be Repub or Dem because they have it written on a card but they vote like the opposite. I was pleased to see more independents running in this cycle because they were able to speak their mind without being restricted by their parties.

Nothing about health care will change until you get the tort reform and that won't happen because too many lawyers on both side of a case are getting paid.

That's why the typical polling question, "Do you think the country is headed in the right direction", is worthless. First, everyone would have to agree that the country is headed in the same direction.

The President is doing a very good job considering the mess he inherited (the ramifications of which will be with us for years to come yet) and especially considering the obstructionism, obfuscation, and outright lies perpetrated by conservatives, republicans, birthers, tenthers, teabaggers, FOX news, and the conservative corporate-owned media. He hasn't even been in office for a year, republicans are still holding up his nominations, his policies have hardly had time to take effect. Give the man some room to do his job and, if you can't help, shut the heck up and get out of the way. You're blocking the future for the rest of us!

I think the cues & signs are supposed to work like similar to what the original Christians did with the fish sign.

The difference between them, though, is that the original Christians were actually persecuted and the rightwingers who incorrectly claim to be conservative imagine that they are the ones who are persecuted.

You have to remember that Obama has been given less than one year to try and change what Bush screwed up in 8 years!

I am one that says if you voted for Bush during his second term, you should not be proud. We wouldn't be in this deep of hole had Kerry been elected 4+ years ago. That pure and simply dirty campaign tactics which Bush's own publicist would tell you was the strategy going in. They had nothing to laud, they could only attack and it worked.

Can you imagine what it would be like if Sarah Palin was VP right now?!?!? That is if she would have not quit by now...

The woman can't even speak somewhere and allow any reporters, cameras or any recording device of any kind... That woman was going to be a heartbeat away from being POTUS (shudders deeply).

Obama is a great President and he would be doing even better if the Repuglicants weren't dragging their feet on every single issue the Administration is trying to pass.

Thanks Republicans for protecting us from the evil of affordable health care for all without preexisting condition restrictions. Those 45,000 Americans who die every year from lack of insurance are real patriots, they'll just keep on dying so we don't have to be Commies...

4.) A "Don't Mess with Texas" koozie setting on the front porch surrounded by at least 13 empty half-crushed beer cans.

That aside, I think Obama is doing a terrific job - of carrying on Carter's legacy. He's nothing more than smoke and mirrors, Pelosi's Puppet.

I think Obama is well on his well on his way to mediocrity at best, and dangerous inadequacy most likely.

The intelligence of a non-Obama vote is proven with every passing day of his arrogant and irresponsible administration. Not a Palin fan, either, but we can only hope for more opposition in Congress to be elected in a year and for a return to American ways in 3 - if there's an America left by then.

I didn't vote for McCain, but I wish I had. I thought Bush was a very poor President. I had some hope for Obama, but that is all gone now. He has done an awful job. He is being ruled by the Democratic leaders of Congress and he has chosen too many extreme left wingers for advisors.

He had done poorly on foreign relations and his domestic agenda is worse. He has not followed through with too many promises.

I had hoped for someone less right that Bush and the pendulum has swung way too far. I has hoped for a stronger leader and the pendulum just stopped at incompetent.

Did not vote for BO and never would. He has proved what I have always thought about him; an empty suit. He is so far in over his head he doesn't have a clue. The one thing he is good at is the parties at the White House on Wednesday nights. When is he going to make a troop decision? If he doesn't want to send more in then just pull out! Make a decision. My bet is that he will live up to his name: surrender-in-chief.

Funny how the Neocons want to blame the past 10 months on O'Bama, but they won't take credit for what happened in the first nine months of the Bush administration. 9-11 DID happen on Bush's watch.

this is why I hate politics. People are so obsessed with "if my guy isn't in office, then to heck with" everything. What happened to helping their constituants, by voting for things that make sense, and not voting by party line. I know that isn't popular, but imagine what we could get accomplished. It doesn't matter whose idea it was, if it helps people, then it's needed. Everyone is so obsessed with making Obama (or any president) a failure that they forget about the American public, who become victims of pissing contests.
Obama isn't the enemy, but I sure feel like the forgotten prisoner of war sometimes.
