Yeah, yeah, yeah, "Hooray for the Vets". Great!
Then why do we have a "Federal Holiday", but most of us veterans have to go to work? Why do the bank employees, government employees and a few others have the day off with pay, but most of the rest of us have to get up and go to work on this fraudulant "holiday"? I once worked at a local business where one of the company officers was a leader in the American Legion, but the company did not give any holiday pay on Veterans Day..
If the government was serious about recognizing the service of military veterans, then why isn't this holiday universal? Seems pretty lousey to me.

For one thing; Veterans Hospitals should be the BEST hospitals in the country. We should be hearing some whine "bu;t I wasn't able to serve in the military, so it's not fair I can't get the better treatment!" I don't think I've heard of one person who is jealous they aren't able to go to a Vets Hospital. That is to our shame.

Gogo - I'm not quite sure how we can ever recognize people enough who put their lives on the line for us everyday. Being a veteran myself of the Persian Gulf War, I am personally honored to have served my country. I think that maybe if our country would follow the lead of a few other nations and made service compulsory for punks like you, your attitude would change. All gave some, but some gave all.

Enough of the they are fighting for us bs. They are fighting for our government which is more than a little corrupt. Fighting for WMDs in Iraq and the fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan has nothing to do with preserving the freedom of US citizens. So vet you can come on back from never never land and face reality. You didn't fight for me so there is no reason for me to recognize you or thank you.

They don't put their lives on the line for us everyday. They put their lives on the line for bonehead ideas our government cooks up like WMDs or the gulf of tonkin. They do it for college money or to get student loans paid off. They do it for experience or training. Most serve for selfish reasons. Some serve for noble reasons like fighting for freedom but freedom is not what they end up fighting for.
I am always amazed at people who claim they love freedom and claim to have even faught for freedom are OK with something like mandatory service. I got news for you that is about as close to slavery as it gets and slavery doesn't jive with freedom.

If it sounds hostile it is because it pisses me off that so many people swallow the patriotism pill so easy. Keeping us out of needless wars does more for the troops than blindly supporting wars that our government starts. Our government is corrupt. The wars our government fights are corrupt. Military personell should read the constitution that they swear to uphold and realize that the domestic enemies that they swear to protect the nation from are far more dangerous than the foreign ones.
