I have always wondered why it is not called Potter Pond, as it is hardly a lake. I hope KU freshmen don't show up on campus with a boat, expecting to sail between classes.
Where the heck is the marina? they will ask.
How many think it was named after Harry?

I prefer to think it was named after Sherman T. (although the timeline would make no sense).
I agree about "pond" vs "lake" although boats have certainly plied its modest waters. But, yeah--it's too big to be a proper lake.
I voted "diamond in the rough," because, with proper restoration and landscaping, it could be turned into a lovely showpiece on campus. No arguing that it's also a local landmark, though. That goes without saying.
Come to think of it, they should have included the choice, "All of the above."

Oops--that should read "too small" to be a proper lake! Haven't had my normal allotment of coffee yet!

Ha, I thought you just had a strange sense of humor.

It's two, a local landmark and a disgusting pond. Actually I'd call it more a cesspool than a pond now that it's all nasty dead. A diamond in the rough my a$$. Maybe a chunk of coal on an otherwise nice landscape.
It'd be nice if, instead of just dredging it, it was actually completely rebuilt and nice. wishful thinking....

Diamond in the ruff. It would be cool to clean it up and add a small pier. Students could swim in it again!

Gross! no less that a "boatload" of guys wee in the poor pond every home game. more like cesspool in need of ada handrails

yoornotme~ That too! But this time it was just an oversight...
d_prowess~ Students could swim in it again? Lord... then there would be no end of drunken drownings. I'd like it to be a clean focal point on campus, but I am afraid that there would be a lot of shenanigans going on there.

In the early '80s I used to study between classes on the west bank of Potter. It was a nice escape from the rushing cattle and bus fumes on Jayhawk Boulevard. It was very pleasant, but even then it was starting to suffer from neglect.
