Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback introduces keynote speaker and anti-slavery activist Kevin Bales during Kansas University’s first Kansas Conference on Slavery and Human Trafficking in Woodruff Auditorium at the Kansas Union. Thursday’s event opened a two-day symposium looking at ways to fight modern-day slavery around the globe.

Fred Rodriguez, vice provost for diversity and equity at Kansas University, is pictured Thursday in Strong Hall. Rodriguez, who is nearing his retirement this summer, has been with the university for 35 years, in which he became the first to teach on the issues of multicultural education and diversity.

Zamarripa recently retired after 41 years as chief financial officer of the Life Span Institute at Kansas University. He and wife Mary Ann visit their grandsons as often as possible.
