Workers with Centimark, a roofing contractor out of Lenexa, replace Ludowici clay tiles Monday on the roof of Spooner Hall at Kansas University. The company removed the tiles, then redecked and put new underlayment on the roof before replacing most of the original tiles. Many tiles are as old as the building, which opened in 1894.
Dead pogies float in a fish kill in a pass near Bay Joe Wise on the Louisiana coast, Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010. The area lies in a so-called "dead zone" near the Gulf of Mexico, which is affected by chemical runoff from farms along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is one of several attorneys general attempting to intervene in a lawsuit filed by environmental groups that seeks to impose new regulations on runoff that flows into the Gulf of Mexico from farms, ranches and sewage systems in Kansas and other states in the Mississippi River basin.

Lawrence mother Alisha Swanson engages in an animated conversation with Laurel Iwig Monday at the Lawrence Iwig Family Dairy store, 1901 Mass. Iwig and her husband Tim opened the market in February, in which they are selling their dairy products as well as produce, meats and other products from local producers. Also pictured are two of Swanson's children, Mackenna, 4, and Sam, 11 months.
In addition to the traditional whole milk, another favorite among many locals is Iwig's strawberry milk.
This photo was taken at 743 Indiana Street. I don't know who is in the photo...the old photo was given to me by someone who stopped by my house and told me it was their grandfather who as a young boy, as the story goes, hid in the cupola watching Lawrence burn when Quantrill came. He said actually, that his grandfather ran to the corn field nearby to hide...
The historic image inset in this photo was taken ca. 1902 and shows Anna (Eide) Anderson and her sister Ella (Eide) Berge (standing in the center) with some of their children, four granddaughters and other family members standing in front of the sandstone home 2 miles east of Vinland that was built in 1868 for Knud & Anna Anderson. Knud and Anna were Norwegian immigrants who settled on this farm in 1857. This 5-room home housed Knud & Anna and their five children and also the widowed Ella Berge and some of her children. My grandmother, Minnie Hoskinson Nichols, is the young girl seated on the ground on the far left.

This undated image made available by CERN shows a typical candidate event including two high-energy photons whose energy (depicted by red towers) is measured in the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter. The yellow lines are the measured tracks of other particles produced in the collision. The pale blue volume shows the CMS crystal calorimeter barrel. To cheers and standing ovations, scientists at the world's biggest atom smasher claimed the discovery of a new subatomic particle Wednesday July 4, 2012, calling it "consistent" with the long-sought Higgs boson — popularly known as the "God particle" — that helps explain what gives all matter in the universe size and shape.

Kansas Rangoon appetizers, prepared by Audrey Lintner, are made with refrigerated crescent roll dough filled with cream cheese, blue cheese, pineapple and diced ham.
From left, Rud Turnbull, Dick Schiefelbusch, Marianna Beach and Ann Turnbull, all of Lawrence, are pictured at Van Go’s annual What Floats Your Boat fundraiser on June 16. Tara Gregg submitted the photo.
