Almost every morning, Lawrence Community Shelter case manager Brian Blevins faces emails, calls and paperwork in his basement office, regarding homeless Lawrence residents and efforts to get them into a stable living environment.

Martha Parker, director of the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum, holds blueprints for the museum expansion project that will break ground this fall. The museum, pictured at left in background, features much of the history of the Wakarusa Valley and the communities that were affected by the construction of Clinton Lake, pictured in background at right near Bloomington Beach. Also planned at the site on Sept. 8 will be a Sigel Harvest Home Picnic Dinner and Music Festival. This festival was the precedent for the annual Douglas County Fair.
Histories on the communities in the Wakarusa Valley that were directly affected by the building of Clinton Lake are exhibited at the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum, as are records of many of the people who lived in the area. A museum expansion project which will break ground this fall.
