1st Lt. Paul Shipley (Class of 2007) with Capt. Alex “Meatloaf” Ramthun (Class of 2000). Both are members of 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, and are deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Capt. Ramthun is the battalion’s air officer and is responsible for naming any Landing Zone (LZ) the battalion is operating out of. When 1/6 captured the city of Marjah, previously held by the Taliban, Ramthun had the perfect name ready for the new LZ - LZ Jayhawk. It serves as 1/6’s lifeline for supplies, troop movement and casualty evacuation. This will remain a tribute to the Jayhawks as long as it is in operation, even when 1/6 returns home to Camp Lejuene, North Carolina at the end of its seven-month deployment. (This is particularly galling to the battalion commander of 1/6, Lt. Col. Calvert Worth, a graduate of the University of Missouri).

Dezmon Briscoe, Darrell Stuckey and Kerry Meier will await their NFL fates Thursday during the 2010 NFL draft.
Fabricio Andrade, of Naples, Fla., left, talks Wednesday with sales consultant Josh Jimenez while sitting inside a GMC Yukon Hybrid vehicle at the Doral Buick GMC dealership in Doral, Fla. Andrade wants to purchase the Yukon and trade in his Lexus because he needs a larger vehicle. More Americans said in a poll that U.S. cars are best compared to those who named Asian autos.

The folks who print America’s money have designed a high-tech makeover of the $100 bill. It’s part of an effort to stay ahead of counterfeiters as technology becomes more sophisticated and more dollars flow overseas, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says. Benjamin Franklin is still on the C-note. But he has been joined by a disappearing Liberty Bell in an inkwell and a bright blue security ribbon composed of thousands of tiny lenses that magnify objects in mysterious ways. Move the bill, and the objects move in a different direction. The new currency will not go into circulation until Feb. 10 of next year.
