With Wal-Mart and the Bauer Farms project going up at the north end of Wakarusa Drive, nearby residents are calling for some major improvements to the north-south connector.

After a five-year odyssey ended Tuesday night with Lawrence City Commission’s approval of a new Wal-Mart at Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive - and the upcoming Bauer Farms project on the northeast corner of the intersection - northwest Lawrence residents say their streets will need attention.

- Attention Wal-Mart shoppers, a new store is coming to town. A six-year battle to build Lawrence’s second Wal-Mart store has come to an end. Wal-mart and local developers won long-sought approval to put a 100-thousand square foot store on the northwest corner of Six Street and Wakarusa Drive.

- Commissioners came to the city bus system’s rescue tonight, saving it from a cutback in service hours. In 2008, the ‘T’ will continue to run until eight at night, instead of shutting down at six.

- Wal-Mart is back at City Hall. City commissioners tonight are scheduled to vote on plans related to Wal-Mart’s proposal to build a store at the northwest corner of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive. Lawrence-Douglas County planning commissioners unanimously recommended approval of the project last month. If city commissioners approve the project, it would mark the end of an approximately five-year battle by developers to build a second Wal-Mart in the city.

- Now that a plan for a new Wal-Mart store in northwest Lawrence is moving forward again, activity is starting to pick back up on the intersection’s other major development proposal. Lawrence architect Michael Treanor said city commissioners soon will see new plans for the Bauer Farm development, which seeks to put a mix of retail, offices and residential units on the northeast corner of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive. That places it across the street from a proposed Wal-Mart store that received Planning Commission approval last week.

That was the message the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission delivered Monday night as it unanimously agreed to recommend that the City Commission approve plans for a new Wal-Mart and four other retail buildings on the northwest corner of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive.

Developers Doug Compton and Bill Newsome said comments had “pretty much all been positive” from the about 30 people who attended an open house Tuesday night at Free State High School to view plans of the retail store proposed in northwestern Lawrence.
