The Lawrence school district is preparing for two more rounds of cuts from the state in coming months that could bring the total budget shortfall to 10 percent of its operating budget.

A section of an original span of the Kansas Turnpike bridge over the Kansas River came down Sunday afternoon. The blast happened around 12:15 p.m., and was the first of three planned explosions to demolish the bridge. The second blast was scheduled for 10 a.m. this morning, but the fog moved it to 10:30. 25 years ago: Gazebo donated to Central Park

As part of the celebration of the 55th anniversary of its chartering, the Lawrence Sertoma Club donated a new gazebo sitting at the top of a grassy knoll in the southeast corner of Central Park. Gene Shaughnessy, a Sertoma spokesman, said, “This is something we felt would help complete the landscaping and upgrading that the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is doing in the park. “

The crying of a baby apparently so wrought on his mind that he left home three times a day rather than be disturbed at meals by the child.
