Lawrence Police Officers investigate this home at 409 Michigan where the body of Jana Lynne Mackey, a 25-year-old Kansas University student, was found late Thursday night. For Wooseung Hong, it didn’t much matter if this year’s fireworks display was at Burcham Park or Clinton Lake. Last year after watching the show on television, he made a promise to his wife and two children that next Fourth of July they would partake in this very American tradition. So from a grassy field just below Clinton Lake’s Sesquicentennial Point, the KU student from South Korea sat on a blanket surrounded by 20 others from his home country and watched as fireworks danced in the sky and the crowd around him oohed and aahed.

Tim Windholz, of Cardinal Construction, work to build a two-story playhouse at his home in west Lawrence. Windholz is utilizing donated material from local companies to build the house for the 17th Annual Casa4CASA fundraiser. For a $1 donation people can enter a drawing to win the playhouse. A miniature cottage is going to have a huge effect on children’s lives. Not only will it bring smiles to the faces of the lucky ones who get to play in it, but it will raise funds to help those who are abused and neglected. The playhouse is part of the 17th annual fundraiser for Douglas County CASA, which provides trained volunteers to work one-on-one with children who have been removed from their homes.

A 25-year-old Kansas University law student was found dead late Thursday night in a home at 409 Mich. Lawrence police have issued an arrest warrant for Adolfo Garcia-Nunez, whom police suspect in the death of the student, Jana Lynne Mackey. The warrant lists the charge as second-degree murder.

It’s hard to ignore the soaring gasoline and food prices these days. While most residents can adjust their budgets by cutting back on extras such as eating out or summer vacations, others are struggling to survive. “It is very, very hard,” said Lawrence resident Rebecca Frazier, 31, whose family of six is on a tight income and can’t afford to fix the air conditioning. They also have a tough time filling the cupboards.

Twice a week, Luke Rhodes hits the gym with high school football and basketball players, lifting weights to hone his skills. But he’s doesn’t play a sport. He plays the piano. That’s in addition to the two hours a day he spends practicing. And the 1 1/2 hours he spends weekly taking private lessons.
