- Narrow-minded
- November 22, 2002
- To the editor: Enough of George Will! Why does the Journal-World continue to give this narrow-minded extremist, space? Is there no one else from the Washington Post Writers Group that can offer a progressive point of view? Quote Mr. Willâs comment regarding recycling, Friday, Nov. 15, âTodayâs Democratic Party believes as ardent environmentalists do, in recycling — of old newspapers, old bottles, old senators …â Apparently, since George does not believe in the concept of recycling, he must have landfill space in his back yard for all of us to use!

- November 22, 2002
- The best moments in Bond films have come when the British agent uses his wits to escape a situation rather than resorting to gadgets. Over the years, that ratio has tilted perilously to the gadgetry side. Fortunately, “Die Another Day” finds Bond (Pierce Brosnan) at his most resourceful. He’s also a little wiser, tougher and, in some ways, more jaded.

- The world first saw Bond, James Bond, in a smoky French casino at 3 in the morning. We followed him back to his hotel room to check his “burglar alarms”: a hair wedged in a desk drawer, a smear of talcum powder on the handle of a cabinet. Next, a cold shower, a cigarette (his 70th of the day) and bed, with a .38 pistol tucked under the pillow.

- November 22, 2002
- To the editor: The letter from Mr. and Mrs. Kofford caught my eye, as I was one of many Democratic activists making phone calls to fellow Democrats the week prior to the election. I am not familiar with the particulars of the new âno-callâ list, but I would think that phone calls exhorting people to vote, to people on political party rolls, do not fall within the purview of that âno-callâ list.

- Light pollution
- November 22, 2002
- To the editor: I had mixed emotions when I read the article in Thursdayâs Journal-World about the WTC beams at the Dole Institute building. Clearly, having the beams there will be very meaningful to us all. Lighting, on the hand, is another problem. As an astronomer, and as a member of the Lawrence community, I hope that any lighting thatâs done might be from above and illuminate the ground (but not too strongly) rather than from the ground, and thus illuminate the sky. Should that occur, we will be polluting the sky with light and degrading yet further the ability of everyone in Lawrence to enjoy the night sky. Losing the freedom to see the universe of which we are a part from our homes and from the university, would be a significant loss.

With this in mind, I would like to ask two questions of Todd and Robin Kofford who recently wrote about their concerns with political calls. One, is it all right for me to brag to my grandchildren that I am important enough that the president of the United States and his wife each took time off on a busy Election Day to call me and, number two, now that my emotional tranquility was violated by election calls, should I consider changing my party affiliation because the president and his first lady showed a general lack of respect for my privacy?
