MORALITY AND SCHOOLS
November 5, 1999
What is so terrible about more emphasis on morality and ethics in our educational systems? All a public figure needs to do anymore to create a verbal storm is to hint, let alone suggest, that the nation might be better-served with a little more emphasis on ethics and morality in our schools. Libertarians can’t get to the mailbox, telephone or microphone and camera quickly enough to denounce such brashness as akin to satanism. They are as bad as those who want to mix teaching with religion in public venues.

SOUNDOFF — FENCES
November 5, 1999
Is there a city ordinance that states the size of a fence on a residential property? If so, what exactly does it state and whom would I contact to report a possible violation of that ordinance? Lynn Goodell, director of Housing and Neighborhood Development, says for residentially used property, fences may not exceed 6 feet in height in the rear yard, 4 feet in side yards or 3 feet in the front yard with one exception to the latter requirement. A front-yard fence may be 4 feet high if the fence is at least 50 percent open. There are provisions for variances from the requirements provided the chief building inspector has approved the variances.

November 5, 1999
Trumpeter Harry James and his famed jazz band were contracted to play for the Kansas University homecoming dance this year (1959). Big band aficionados advised people to get out and support the appearance since the big band era seemed about to vanish from the scene and there might not be many more chances to see a James-type performance here. Solists, small groups and combos were becoming all the rage with the rising costs of keeping a large group together and on the road.

As many as 20,000 of the 35,398 registered voters in Douglas County were expected to turn out for the Nov. 5 general election, a total considered exceptional for a non-presidential balloting year.
