- If you surf the World Wide Web at all, chances are that from time to time you have encountered various kinds of multimedia content — in other words, you’ve run across links that were intended to play audio or video clips. There is a variety of formats for such content, but one of the more popular formats is named after the group that developed it: MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group). MPEG is a set of standards that are used for encoding and decoding various types of audio-visual information in a digital format that permits this information to be stored as data files and played back on computers. It is well-suited to the Internet, and every day, more and more MPEG files are made available via the Web.
