The mission of The Shelter, Inc., is to improve the lives of children and families. We serve children from all over the state of Kansas in our home community of Lawrence. Learn about our programs here or on our website.
The Shelter, Inc. has been serving children and families from Lawrence, KS and surrounding communities since 1981, when our first emergency shelter facility opened. Since that time, the agency has diversified and grown to meet the needs of our community while striving to provide the highest standard of care.
You may know us from our fund-raiser, the annual Lawrence Festival of Trees, held each year at Liberty Hall. Find more information about the Festival of Trees in our Programs and Events sections, and pictures of trees and wreaths from previous years in Photos.

I give Shelters Inc. zero stars. The staff of Shelters Inc. are some of the rudest people I have ever encountered. I found this very surprising considering they are supposed to be helping the local Lawrence community. After the head woman Judy Culley was extremely rude to me I was hoping to get further help from another staff member. I was wrong, the other staff members were just as rude as Culley. I would not recommend going to Shelters Inc. or donating your time or money to them. It all probably goes in the workers high salaries for it being a non-profit organization.
