KU Hospital surgeon leading way
Dr. Kim Templeton, an orthopedic oncologist at Kansas University Hospital, is at the forefront of cancer care. She is one of few doctors worldwide who is using a Thallium dye test — usually used for heart patients — to help detect cartilage tumors.

Root beer floats helping CASA program
A local 12-year-old was doing his part to help raise money for Douglas County CASA. The money raised will most likely be used for birthday bags and backpacks for children in the court system as a result of abuse.

County commission looking to create jobs

A local man and KU professor is trying to raise awareness of dangers associated with a commonly used antibiotic. Local pharmacists say the drug is common and side effects come with many drugs.

Low-wage and immigrant workers in Lawrence gathered to take part in a Worker's rights justice meeting. Some local workers claim they have been the victims of unfair treatment in the workplace.

Festival at Oread raises thousands
About 500 people descended on The Oread during the weekend for a food and wine tasting fundraising event. The three-day event raised between $60,000 and $80,000.

Young pianists compete on KU campus
About 75 of the best young pianists from around the world gathered on the KU campus to take part in a three week institute. The institute begins with a competition between the young musicians.

Dollhouses support Douglas County CASA
Community groups participating in the annual CASA fundraiser were asked to decorate dollhouses this year. The projects will be on display at the Lawrence Arts Center.

Local golfer defends tournament title
Conrad Roberts, a former KU golfer, successfully defended his LAGA tournament title during the weekend. Roberts has now won the event five consecutive times.

Storm leaves water standing in Lawrence despite sunshine
A Sunday-morning storm left standing water throughout town despite the sun being out. The weather knocked out power of more than 1,000 homes around Douglas County, and took out power at the 23rd and Alabama streets stoplight.
