- 40 years ago: Dark plumes of smoke from CFCA plant mostly steam

- Lawrence residents were inquiring about the dark-colored plumes of smoke coming from the towers of the CFCA plant east of town. The CFCA manager responded that the “smoke” was mostly steam, with trace amounts of ammonium nitrate dust, and that during periods of cooler weather the steam would condense, making the particles more noticeable.
- 25 years ago: Wyandotte County judge recovering after falling off Lawrence bridge

- Wyandotte County judge Lawrence G. Zukel was recovering at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was suffering severe back pain and “about two million mosquito bites” after falling off a bridge while on a foggy late-night walk. After lying under the bridge all night, unable to move, the judge was discovered in the morning by a construction worker.
