From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 29, 1909: It is a race now between the farmers and Jack Frost to see who will get the sugar cane first. Hundreds of acres were grown north of Lawrence and scores of canemills have been busy crushing out the sap from the stalks and boiling it into sorghum. Yields have been in the range of $40 to $60 an acre and there appears to be a ready market if the cold weather can be beaten to the finish line… . A new steel bridge over Rock Creek is to replace the old wooden structure and commissioners say that from now on, only steel or concrete bridges are to be built in Douglas County.

A development firm based in Baltimore, Md., was seeking permission to build a 450,000-square-foot regional shopping mall on Iowa Street in southwest Lawrence, just south of Armstrong Road. Delta Properties Inc. filed an application with the city-county planning office to rezone 61 acres from residential and flood plain classification to general commercial use. The move was expected to force a local development group to create more speedily a shopping mall in the 600 block of downtown Lawrence. The request was due before the city commission no earlier than Dec. 4. The site was the same one proposed for a center in 1978 which was rejected.
