They’re the ones who are always thinking, “Will the seniors stuff me into a trash can or locker?” or “I don’t know anyone. What if all of my friends ditch me for more cool, more popular people?”

Cuban refugee Juan Carlos Zaldivar explores his complex feelings about his old country and his adopted homeland in the thoughtful documentary “90 Miles” on “P.O.V.” (9 p.m., PBS). A self-described “teenage communist” who embraced Castro’s revolution and attended an elite Cuban prep school, Zaldivar joined his family in the 1980 exodus known as the Mariel boatlift. Once in Miami, he and his family were embraced by cousins and shocked to see that America was not the land of gangsters, murder and chaos that Castro’s propagandists had described.

Many children in foster care are not victims of abuse or neglect. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius recently announced that the child abuse and neglect hot line was being brought “in-house” starting Aug. 19. This is good news for children who are victims of abuse or neglect. But what if the “house” is full? That is, what if there are not enough foster homes to provide a safe home for these children because the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services uses so many of these homes for children who are not victims of abuse or neglect?

The price of the basic school meal at breakfast and lunch will increase 5 cents when classes start in August.
