Emergency crews Tuesday worked to put out a structure fire at the Gaslight Village off 31st Street. One of the residents, who was working to fix a leaking pipe, talks about what he did and what he saw as the fire broke out.
A mobile home caught on fire Tuesday evening at the Gaslight Village mobile home park in the 1900 block of 31st Street in south Lawrence. The fire was extinguished within an hour but witnesses described the building as badly damaged.
Alaide Vilchis, a Kansas University graduate, was in the Capitol to urge legislators to reject a bill that seeks to repeal a law that allows undocumented students pay the lower in-state tuition. She said she couldn't have gone to college without the law. She was interviewed prior to a scheduled hearing on the repeal bill.
Andrea Prado-Spalding, a Kansas State University graduate, has benefited from a 2004 law that allows some children of illegal immigrants to pay the lower in-state tuition rate. Secretary of State Kris Kobach is seeking to repeal the law. Prado-Spalding was interviewed Tuesday prior to a scheduled hearing on the repeal bill.
