Lawrence bikers, walkers counted
Volunteers were hanging out around Lawrence Thursday counting the number of bicyclists and pedestrians sharing roadways in town. The numbers, which will be collected Saturday as well, will help the city get a better idea of how many more bike lanes and shared-use paths are needed.

Lawrence student sick with meningitis
A Lawrence junior high student has been diagnosed with viral meningitis and students have been told to practice good personal hygiene. Viral meningitis is not as serious as its bacterial relative.

New initiative targets those with special needs
The annual meeting of emergency management directors from across the state was held in Topeka Thursday. A new initiative presented at the meeting is aimed at helping ensure those with special needs are not left behind during emergency situations. People who believe they may require help during disaster situations can join a registry to notify people in their area that they may require extra help.

Woman arrested for arson incident
A Lawrence woman was arrested Wednesday for what may have been an incident of arson. The woman was breaking windows and throwing property out into the yard of a residence when officers discovered a fire in a nearby residence's living room.

Company wants sand pit on Eudora land
Kaw Valley companies wants to build a sorting and washing facility on land in Eudora. The land is near the town's major water supply and is slated for a sand pit.

Kansas State on top list by mistake
Kansas State University was ranked as one of the most desirable universities in the country, but by mistake. The numbers collected from the university by the survey group were incorrect the past two years.

KU football prepping for Friday night lights
The Jayhawks will be in the national spotlight Friday night when they take on Southern Mississippi on ESPN. The last time KU was on national television on a Friday night didn't go so well. The team hopes not to have that result repeat itself.

Firebirds look to remain unbeaten
The Free State football team will try and improve to 3-0 on the season Friday. The team has bounced back nicely after losing its star quarterback to graduation.

Free State volleyball wins two
Free State won two of three matches Thursday night on the team's home court. Lawrence High played away from home Thursday and also won two matches.

Journal-World wins newspaper of the year
The Lawrence Journal-World won the award for 2010 Newspaper of the Year from the Suburban Newspaper of America. This is the fourth time the Journal-World has received the honor since 2005.
