Program aims to protect women at bars
A new program is getting funding from the United Way in its effort to protect the female bar crowd in Lawrence. The United Way will provide $5,000 during the next two years to help the program.

Area kids take pride in wetlands

Local business owner says taxes were paid
A local business owner said he paid sales taxes owed to the state. Assets were seized by the state from University Audio after it was said the business owed more than $8,000.

A civil settlement was reached Thursday in a hit-and-run case from four years ago. The judge approved the settlement in the wrongful death complaint.

Woman in fair condition after hitting power line
A Lawrence woman is in fair condition at KU Hospital after striking a power line while driving Wednesday night. The accident left hundreds of people without power.

Plan for corporate retreat in works
Plans to create a relaxed corporate retreat in Lawrence are currently in the works. The developers are asking for approval for the project and no time line has been set.

Newest zoo member battling hoof disease
A 10-day-old giraffe at the Topeka Zoo is working through a congenital hoof disease. The newest member of the zoo family has already attracted a lot of attention.

Oread holds pre-tournament mixer
Members of the 2008 national championship team were at the Oread Hotel Thursday to take part in a mixer event. Mario Chalmers was among the attendees for the pre-National Championship Classic event.

Series scheduled against Ohio State
The Jayhawks basketball team has set a home-and-home series with the Ohio State Buckeyes that will begin in the 2011 season. The Jayhawks will host the Buckeyes and then travel to Ohio the following year.

Jayhawk named to preseason Big 12 team
Only one Jayhawk was named to the preseason All Big 12 team. Sophomore offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson received the honor. Hawkinson started every game for the Jayhawks last season.
