Parents, residents oppose closing schools
Parents in the Lawrence school district don't want to see any of the local elementary schools close. The reality may be that some area schools will close to save money in the face of impending budget cuts.

City moving forward with airport project
The city made a preliminary agreement Tuesday to move forward with a $1.9 million project to extend the sewer system to the Lawrence Municipal Airport. City leaders believe the project would help attract more businesses to the area.

City trees trimmed to preserve power
City crews were working Tuesday to cut down trees around Watson Park. The project will help ensure power lines are not damaged by overhanging branches.

The number of alcohol abuse cases seen at Lawrence Memorial Hospital has been on the rise the last few years. Doctors. Alcohol awareness programs and policies have been a little more aggressive since the alcohol-related deaths of two KU students in 2009.

Local group has homeowners in mind
A local nonprofit organization is working to get some first-time homeowners into a newly-renovated house. The group is selling the house cheap on the condition that when the owners leave they also sell the place at an affordable price.

Lady Chieftains upend Cardinals
The Tonganoxie girls basketball team advanced to the semifinal of the annual Tonganoxie Invitational tournament. Tonganoxie won 48-40.

Tonganoxie boys beat Jeff West
The Tonganoxie boys basketball team beat Jeff West handily Tuesday. The Chieftains won the contest 60-50.

The Eudora boys basketball team took it to Don Bosco early and often Tuesday. The Cardinals won 60-32.

Free State High's girls basketball team couldn't keep up with the inside play of Topeka. The Firebirds dropped the contest 36-45.

Marcus Morris has been rising to the occasion ever since being benched by head coach Bill Self. He has been more aggressive going to the basket and defending and his numbers have reflected his level of effort.
