Family readies for hunting competition
An area family's love of the hunt will be on display as the youngsters take part in a squirrel hunt Saturday. Hunting has been just one way the family has bonded together over the years.

K2 is no longer being sold in Lawrence businesses after raids and an arrest. A 29-year-old Lawrence man accused of selling and distributing the controlled substance will have a preliminary hearing in April.

Snowfall causes traffic problems
Mother Nature dumped more than three inches of snow on Lawrence Friday. Police responded to more than 40 traffic accidents during the day.

Wear Red Day recognizes heart disease
Lawrence residents raised money and awareness for the American Heart Association on Friday, which was National Wear Red Day. Among the Lawrence activities was a health fair at Haskell Indian Nations University.

Governor discusses smoking bill
Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson says he plans to veto a House bill that would ban smoking in public indoor places while allowing numerous exemptions. Parkinson says the bill is ridiculous.

Nation's kids get brighter smiles
The Douglas County Dental Clinic in Lawrence participated in the national Give Kids A Smile Day. They provided free care for about 20 low-income children who didn't have insurance. The care was worth about $4,000.

The LHS boys basketball team started the season 0-6. Since then they've gotten on track but dropped one Friday to Shawnee Mission West, 38-50.

The Free State boys basketball team handled Shawnee Mission East easily on Friday. The Firebirds won 63-49.

KU looks to sweep series with Nebraska
The Jayhawks return to the Phog Saturday to take on the Cornhuskers in round two of the regular-season series. Kansas won the first meeting.

Starside Elementary School in De Soto is tending to a collection of worms that are helping to break down cafeteria waste. The school has twelve bins or factories of the Pennsylvania red wigglers to help create the compost.

6 Weather Afternoon Forecast for Feb. 5, 2010
Snow will continue to taper off for the afternoon. Snow totals so far are between 3-4 inches across Douglas county. Temperatures will stay in the low 30's through the day with a light snow or flurries expected for the afternoon and evening. Low will drop to the middle 20's this evening with a north wind between 5-15 mph.

Snow challenges Lawrence drivers
Motorists were struggling to maneuver up the hills near Kasold Drive and Peterson Road Friday morning. About an inch of snow had fallen by the time this video was taken. City crews are on the roads treating with a mix of salt and sand.
