Minimum wages increase
Minimum wages across the nation increased Friday. The increase will bring minimum wages up to $7.25 an hour and will cost the city an additional $25,000 each year.

The weather tonight should be warm and comfortable with temperatures in the low 80s. There is a chance of thunder showers into the late evening and early Saturday morning.
Benches display youth art
Artwork from area youth will be on display at Seventh and New Jersey streets in the form of benches. The works of art will be placed in visible locations throughout Douglas County.
Possible funding for recreation center
City commissioners will meet Tuesday to discuss the possibility of funding for a new recreation center. The issue will be brought up during the weekly meeting Tuesday night.
City leaders reach agreement
City leaders avoided a budget battle after reaching a tentative agreement regarding labor contracts for 2010. The contracts will include a wage increase, though smaller than this year's.
Accident sends one to hospital
A 55-year-old man was taken to a Kansas City hospital after crashing into a building which caused a natural gas leak. Also, a 14-year-old driver involved in a collision with a tree Wednesday was released from the hospital.

Airshow displays miniature airplanes
An airshow showcasing numerous remote-controlled model airplanes will clutter the skies east of Clinton Lake this weekend. Some of the model planes can reach speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.
Lawrence resident celebrates 100 years
Lawrence resident Ina Arnett will be celebrating 100 years of life. She moved to Lawrence in 1993 and will celebrate with a party Saturday.
Raiders advance to tournament final
The Lawrence Raiders captured a second straight playoff victory to clinch a spot in the summer tournament final. They won the game 6-1.
KU Football players recieve honors
Two members of the KU football team received Big XII preseason honors. The media selected the players as part of the 22 best players in the conference.
KU's Crawford to transfer
KU Football player Jocques Crawford will transfer to a lower-division school to play. Crawford cited a desire for more playing time as a main reason for his departure.

It will be a very hot, and somewhat humid, Friday across the area. As a cold front slices into Friday's unstable heat and humidity, we may see a few isolated storms form by Friday evening.
Highway 24 along the north side of Topeka could present problems, so take I-70 from Lawrence to Topeka. It should be a hot one today.
