I watched a friend die from complications after receiving the regular flu vaccine. I am not willing to take that chance. I do not believe the government is being truthful about the epidemic and therefore feel this vaccine is just a quick way out. How can you make a vaccine for something so quickly? Why are there limited quantities if it is so simple as a vaccine? I don't want to inject a live virus into my body or my childrens' just to "ward" off that same virus. It doesn't make sense to me.

  4. midwestmom (anonymous) says…

I voted 'no' for me - because I'm not in the higher risk group and want those that are to have an opportunity to receive it first. I did get a regular flu shot, as did my children. I'm hoping that I can get H1N1 flu vaccines for them. Children, adolescents and young adults are at a much higher risk of serious complications than a healthy middle aged person. I am washing my hands a lot and have my Clorox wipes at the ready. I can't believe the number of people who are sick right now - it isn't even November, yet. Wow!

  5. gconfo (anonymous) says…

    Angel4dennis,

It is of course your choice not to have the vaccine, but you should know that complications from the flu vaccine are much less likely to occur than actually catching the virus you are being inoculated against. Why the paranoia regarding the government's truthfulness? The quantities are currently limited due to the fact that this virus grew much more slowly than the strains typically used in the seasonal flu vaccine. Additionally, no live virus is injected; only the inhaled, flu mist version contains live virus (and it is weakened to the point of not being able to reproduce). Your body produces antibodies in response to the introduction of viral antigens.
All of this is basic science taught in most high school or college biology/health classes. What, exactly, doesn't make sense?

  6. dulcinea47 (anonymous) says…

No, because I'm not in a risk group (among other reasons). If I were, I'd reconsider.

  7. Informed (anonymous) says…

No, because I never get the flu shot and I'm not about to start now.

  8. mjwgoku (anonymous) says…

    Same as Informed.
I did get a shot for the flu 20 some years ago and it made me sick. then I go the flu twice that year. My immune is fine.

  9. jason2007 (anonymous) says…

Used to work at KUMed in their Adult ICU. I'll never forget what a cardiovascular surgeon once said to me when he heard that KUMed was giving free shots out front one morning..."Anyone who gets that shot is deluded. The CDC is simply guessing at which dozen flu strains are going to be prevalent this winter out of the thousands of strains that are possible. Inevitably, they get one strain right but the person has been exposed to the other 11 strains in the vaccine, and the risks therein, without any benefit."

I understand the H1N1 vax is targeted but his warning was very pointed.

  10. Gootsie (anonymous) says…

    What dulcinea said.

  11. gphawk89 (anonymous) says…

Already did. But the entire family of the person in the cubicle next to me already has it, so I figure I'm toast anyway. Too bad the vaccine wasn't available a few weeks earlier when it really could have made a difference.

    nope.

    Golicali:

You have to remember that posters on a newspaper DO NOT represent the majority of the opinions on any issue. You are dealing with people who are overly opinionated and the results of comments or polls on newspapers are skewed. I post for about half hour a day on several sites. It is my find out what the masses are babbling about time.

I realize I am one of these nuts as well.

By the way, the angriest city in Kansas is Junction City.

  14. gccs14r (anonymous) says…

I never get a flu shot anyway, and I remember the swine flu hysteria in the 70s. No, thanks. Besides, one of these days they're going to sneak an RFID capsule into the shot. I'm not interested in carrying a radio tag against my will.

Inevitably, they get one strain right but the person has been exposed to the other 11 strains in the vaccine, and the risks therein, without any benefit.”"

This statement is not factual. First of all, there are not a dozen flu strains in the regular seasonal vaccine. There are three - influenza B, influenza A (H1N1), and influenza A (H3N2). Each strain changes slightly or "drifts" periodically, so most years they change what is in the vaccine to try to match the predominant version of each of the three different types of influenza. But they do not pick a dozen out of thousands - that is simply not factual - go to cdc.com for the facts.

Second, even if the vaccine exposes you to viruses that ultimately do not circulate, that does not necessarily cause any risks - in fact, it is ultimately beneficial, as you will produce antibodies to those viruses if they do in fact circulate.

I would end by suggesting that cardiovascular surgeons are great sources of information about cardiovascular topics, but not necessarily epidemiology, although it is possible that jason2007 simply misunderstood or paraphrased whatever was said.

I should be safe. I stopped eating pork so I'm not going to get it anyway.

  21. somedude20 (anonymous) says…

Funny that people are so afraid of the side effects from the vaccine but will swallow medications that have much more serious effects.

  22. pdecell (Paul Decelles) says…

Not planning on getting H1N1 unless the vaccine becomes generally available but I am not in a high risk group. I will get the seasonal flu shot. Theloinious is absolutely correct about the seasonal flu vaccine. Also complications from the flu are much more likely than any complication from the vaccine, so folks- stop rationalizing and if you are in a high risk H1N1 group then get the shot as soon as you can. And get seasonal flu as that becomes available.

  23. BorderRat (anonymous) says…

Nope, the tin foil on my head will keep me safe. No, wait...I think that may be for something else. Never mind.

thelonious: I trust any govt entity about as far as I can throw them. I will place my trust in people I know well, worked beside for years, and who have the scientific knowledge to speak with insight on a subject.

A Cardiologist may not be an epidemiologist, but they know how disease and immunization work. Epidemiology is a required course in all Medical programs. It's just the specialists who have to dive deeper but the basic gist is well understood by any MD. Especially a cardiologist who has to understand how infectious disease affects the myocardium.

  25. dulcinea47 (anonymous) says…

Bob, I'm 35. Apparently old enough to not be at particular risk from this flu which makes me happy.

  26. cntrygrl (anonymous) says…

I won't be getting the vacc because I have a disorder that would cause me to die if I did receive it. But, as far as my kids go, I don't feel like there's enough information on it. I'm afraid that they would be worse off.

I'm just doing a lot of praying!!

  27. ralphralph (anonymous) says…

Too late. My family already has had H1N1 before the vaccine became available ... and even if it had been available, I understand that we would have been low priority and would have been refused the vaccine.
    Govt Healtcare debut?
    Too little, too late.
    Get used to it.

  28. The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…

Dulcinea - Hey, I'm near there. Just joking with you.

  29. autie (anonymous) says…

hey, I'm pretty near there too. only off by 20.

I take my vaccine very seriously. So seriously that I usually have a glass of vaccine most everyday about 5 p.m. And sometimes on Fridays, I over vaccinate just to make sure.

  30. Sigmund (anonymous) says…

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I heard a few emergency room docs will not take the vaccine because it did not go through the normal FDA procedures.

This is hearsay and worse yet, inaccurate. I wish people would stop spreading rumours and such on this site and stick to the facts.

The fact is, it did go through the normal FDA procedures. Read all about it at cdc.com.

If I am in an ER, I sure hope that I don't get any doctor that is willfully ignorant of the facts. Might wind up with leeches on my torso when I really need an appendectomy.

You posted a dead link. I looked at the CDC website and saw nothing about the approval process for the vaccine. The information I was passing along was from a Nurse at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Anyway, could you post a specific link to the H1N1 vaccine approval process? TIA.

  35. RoeDapple (anonymous) says…

Sigmund, the FDA does the approval, not the CDC

    http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/Consu...

In the ongoing clinical studies, the 2009 H1N1 vaccines have been well tolerated. However, consumers need to be aware of the following:

    • People with severe or life-threatening allergies to chicken eggs, or to any other substance in the vaccine, should not be vaccinated.

    • Potential side effects of the H1N1 vaccines are expected to be similar to those of seasonal flu vaccines. For the injected vaccine, the most common side effect is soreness at the injection site. Other side effects may include mild fever, body aches, and fatigue for a few days after the inoculation. For the nasal spray vaccine, the most common side effects include runny nose or nasal congestion for all ages, sore throats in adults, and—in children 2 to 6 years old—fever. (Also see seasonal flu information in the "For More Information" section below.)

    • As with any medical product, unexpected or rare serious adverse events may occur.

This is what happens when an adminstration lies and lies and lies again. When the public needs to trust them and follow their lead, we dare not.

Curses be upon you, Rahm Emmanuel, David Azelrod, Barack Obama and Kathleen Sebelius. If only you had not been proven to be liars so many times before.....

  37. gphawk89 (anonymous) says…

"People with severe or life-threatening allergies to chicken eggs, or to any other substance in the vaccine, should not be vaccinated"

That's me (severe egg allergies). Swollen arm in the vicinity of the shot, asthma attack, all kinds of allergic symptoms for about 36 hours. But it was worth it.

  38. KUweatherman (Curtis Lange) says…

    Absolutely not.

  39. bearded_gnome (anonymous) says…

    Sigmund,
as best I can find looking at current news releases, etc., the U.S. uman trials of the H1N1 vaccine are either *not complete yet* or are *not evaluatedyet.*

it is irresponsible to be doing public administration of large-scale vaccine without completion of the human trials process.

I would not get the vaccine until the risk profile for it is known.

    ***
back in june or july I wrote on here they wouldn't have the h1n1 vaccine done in time.

*note, Mrs. Gnome is sick starting today with a flu-like illness.

In celebration of Al Yankovic 50th birthday, I present for your listening pleasure,

"Germs" - Weird Al Yankovic (X-Files FanVid)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd9lXN...

Sometimes I really want to be alone
But that's one state I'm never in
Because I know that I've got millions upon millions
Of tiny one-celled organisms living on my skin

(Germs) I rub and scrub until my flesh is raw and bleeding
(Germs) But they just come right back again
(Germs) I can't even see 'em
But I know they're up to something
    Hey-don't touch that-you don't know where it's been!

    They're all over me
    They're inside of me
Can't get 'em off of me
    I'm covered with...(microscopic bacteria)
What do they want from me
    What'll they do to me?
    There's no escape for me
    I'm crawling with...(microscopic bacteria)

Now if I ever dare to go to sleep
That's when they start they're sneak attack
In the morning I wake up in utter horror
To find my teeth are covered with bacterial plaque

(Germs) Can't get those parasitic creatures off my face
(Germs) And there's more coming every day
(Germs) I never said that they could camp out on my body
I wish they'd pack their tiny little bags and move away

    They're all over me
    They're inside of me
Can't get 'em off of me
    I'm covered with...(microscopic bacteria)
What do they want from me
    What'll they do to me?
    There's no escape for me
    I'm crawling with...(microscopic bacteria)

    They're creepin' around my shorts
    They're under the bathroom sink
    They're ridin' inside my car
    They're swimmin' in every drink
    They're hidin' between my toes
    They're lurkin' in every kiss
I got 'em way up my nose
    In every orifice
I'm gonna show them who's boss
    I'm gonna get even yet
    Just gimme some Lysol spray
Just hand me a moist towelette
    Don't tell me I'm paranoid
I know that they're after me
    Look under the microscope
    See?

    They're all over me
    They're inside of me
Can't get 'em off of me
    I'm covered with...(microscopic bacteria)
What do they want from me
    What'll they do to me?
    There's no escape for me
    I'm crawling with...(microscopic bacteria)

    They're all over me
I can feel 'em all over me
    Over every part of me
    (Microscopic bacteria)
    I know they're watching me
    They're always watching me
    They're coming after me
    (Microscopic bacteria)
    Won't somebody help me
    Please somebody help me
    You've got to believe me
    They're out to get me
    They wanna control me
    They wanna destroy me
    They're tryin' to kill me
    It kind of upsets me
