I thought the story attached to this poll was concerning end of year bonuses, not pay raises. Did I miss understand the story? I ask because the answer would probably be very different. If it is pay raises, performance would be the best quality to evaluate. If it is just a bonus, then years of service makes sense.

Where is the NO choice on this "survey"?
Looks like the J/W is a bit biased in this survey, forcing the poll to give the workers a raise regardless.
City worker's morale low? Maybe Corliss should encourage a rebate to all city residents to encourage and boost their morale.

I am a very, very angry citizen of Lawrence...

Come about Christmas, they should give the employees a goose or turkey. That's good enough. I know I don't get no dang bonus. My bonus is, that if I show up everyday and do what I am supposed to do, I get to keep my job.

My job doesn't offer any bonuses and our raise, well, it isn't enough to even count. But at least I got to keep my job for now. If I see the guys standing on the side of the road looking at what needs to be done but not actually doing much, then I think they deserve the biggest raise/bonus. This is our tax dollars hard at work.
dudedog12 (anonymous) says…
autie has it nailed down. for those of us that are just lucky to have jobs... no bonuses for any reason.
Liberty275 (anonymous) says…
How about no bonus and reduced taxes?
dudedog12 (anonymous) says…
Neither , they should not get one.
dudedog12 (anonymous) says…
thats a good thought liberty, how about that for some extra votes politicians ??

I thought i was reading the Topeka site for a second. Only my home town is so heartless that it would say no pay increase for city workers.
I think this greed over saving taxes is why this country is in the toilet. People are all about making sure no one else gets something they do not get. I still believe that if you work hard and honestly you should be rewarded. Employees who try their best should get regular raises and bonuses depending both on their time and work performance. This is America, not Russia. .
It would appear that Autie (who I usually agree with but do not today), Liberty and dudedog are just little men who can do no better so they want to stick it to the City employees to feel better. Petty little small people you all are.
(I crack myself up sometimes)

Performance......the retirement pension is for longevity. WTH is wrong with the decison makers in our town?

Government employees should get a pay raise that allows them to maintain their lifestyle(IE inflation). No Bonus for government jobs. It's not too hard. Government jobs should be about serving the people and not be seen as a lucrative venture. Is that the way it really is? Probably not. Is that the way it should be?

I think the people that work for the city probably don't make a lot of money and if there is a way to squeek out a year end bonus - I'm happy for them. Wish everyone who works could have the same opportunity, but the city doesn't have control over KU or Payless shoes - they do have the ability to help their employees and they chose to do that. Good for them.

Let me get this straight! Bonuses are given to employees with money they don't have Right, and for years of service.NOT!!!!! Sounds lide an Obama thing to me!!!
mom_of_three (anonymous) says…
If they don't have the money for it, then there is nothing to give. period.
jumpin_catfish (anonymous) says…
No brainer, no money, no funny.
bankboy119 (anonymous) says…
This is awful. If any business gave money to employees without having it they would fail. But because we ask our government to be fiscally responsible then we're petty babboy?
It's called money management.
LA_Ex (anonymous) says…
Since we have so many business owners on here...
1) How do you reward your employees?
2) How do you retain your employees after you've paid to train them?
3) If you pay your employees less than the private sector, what do you do to keep them from moving to the private sector?
It's cheaper to pay a $48 year end bonus and do some other small things like that to keep your employee's happy and retain their services than it to train new people over and over again.
ibroke (anonymous) says…
how about you get your fat noses out of their business and worry about your own life!!!!!!
LarryNative (anonymous) says…
Both. If you do not reward an employee for loyalty, they won't stick around.
