When we are talking of ways to cut services such as $6 per hour crossing guards and nature centers we do not talk about creating a whole new position that would undoubtably pay upwards of $100,000. Absolutely not.

  2. notajayhawk (anonymous) says…

"Does Lawrence need a director of sustainability?"Nobody could last very long in such a position.

  3. Newell_Post (anonymous) says…

The principles of sustainability are excellent, but there is no connection whatsoever between those principles and yet another bureaucracy.

  4. Hermanoid (anonymous) says…

Any question that begins "Does Lawrence need a..." the answer is no. Lawrence needs to manage what it has properly. Can Lawrence afford it? No. Can Lawrence exist without it? Absolutely.

    Loons!

    Boondoggle.

Sometimes I think this city just wants to anger people and waste taxes. Any by sometimes, I mean every day. Oh well, hopefully I am moving to KC by the end of the year...see ya, Lawrence.

  8. spammer89 (anonymous) says…

Hmmmm let me think about this..........not only no but hell no what a waste of money.

  9. autie (anonymous) says…

I believe that position is already filled. By a guy named Corliss, if I'm not mistaken.

  10. The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…

Autie - Exactly what I was thinking. Isn't that the city manager's job?

  11. beawolf (anonymous) says…

Has there been an actual posting for this position? For some reason this is the first I've read about. On occasion I'll avoid the news for a few days so I may have missed this earlier.

  12. free2bme (anonymous) says…

Watch...I'm pretty sure this will show up during the budget negotiations as savings for a position not filled. Smoke and mirrors...

  13. autie (anonymous) says…

perchedbird, we call that kind of thing open dialogue. I hear it's pretty important in a democracy. If you want to know about opossums, you look for a boy with dirt under his fingernails...

  14. toe (anonymous) says…

    Hell no!

  15. cheeseburger (anonymous) says…

I cannot believe the audacity of city leaders to even bring something like this up when existing services are on the chopping block. Talk about being out of tune with reality! If this is so darned important, handle it within, absent adding staff or wasting more money.

we must be more like our sister city 'the peoples republic of boulder'!'the nation of douglas' must develop its own green currency and establish carbon tax credits like boulder, come on people join the 21st century!

I would vote. But, even though I have worked and still work some as lobbyist, I have no clue what that is.

  19. rez4prez (anonymous) says…

This is a ridiculous!!! Why isn't this a function of the current Utility Department?

  20. rusty2 (anonymous) says…

YES, and the Director of Sustainability should have VETO power over the City Commissioners and the City Manager. time for a structural change, let the green revolution begin.

  21. biggunz (anonymous) says…

Well, maybe they can lay off a few more city employees and cut some funding here and there to make it happen. I can't believe they'd give this idea 2 seconds of thought. That it even makes it into the paper is idiotic.

  22. tir (anonymous) says…

The city already has a Sustainability Advisory Board. Why don't they use it, instead of creating (and making us fund) a new position?http://www.lawrencerecycles.org/envadvisoryboard.shtml

  23. snap_pop_no_crackle (anonymous) says…

Relax and have a popsicle, rusty2. It's a cool and fruity treat on a winter day.

  24. kittycatty26 (anonymous) says…

Just another way to spend more money that the city doesn't have. NO!

  25. kimbermarie (anonymous) says…

Just sounds like an additional hefty salary to carry.

  26. mkhana (anonymous) says…

Give me that job and I ll do it for free!

  27. cknajsmeemaw (Sheila Couchman) says…

Please tell me they are kidding!! They need to keep school crossing guards as a priority. NO new hires of any kind and freeze wages of city employees. All the companies that are trying to stay in business are doing these things. Wake up, City of Lawrence!

  28. OonlyBonly (anonymous) says…

What is wrong with the thinking process of the supposed "leaders" of Lawrence?

  29. jumpin_catfish (anonymous) says…

Genius and stupidity are similar except that stupidity has no limits. Especially in Larryville!

  30. gl0ck0wn3r (anonymous) says…

Who *exactly* is urging the city to create this post other than the same people who urge more and more government spending? A cursory look at the roster of this advisory board turns up the same people who sit on every advisory board - unelected "experts" spending your money like Heckler (merrill) and Routh.http://www.ci.lawrence.ks.us/advisorybds/board_rosters/sustainability_advisory_board.html

  31. rusty2 (anonymous) says…

change has to start somewhere.sustainability is a benefit for all of us.

  32. Omegatron (anonymous) says…

Hire me. I'll take home the money and hire mkhana to do it for free. Winning situation all around.

  33. been_there (anonymous) says…

Keep the crossing guards and when they are driving around they can stop at houses with regular light bulbs and ask them to change them. They could also get tag numbers of cars belching smoke and dripping gas and oil and turn them over to the city.

  34. gl0ck0wn3r (anonymous) says…

"rusty2 (Anonymous) says… change has to start somewhere."Fine. Disconnect yourself from the grid and we can start change with you. Let's hold off on expensive city-wide change mandated by a minority of faux-technocracts and funded by taxes on the proles until the economy is in slightly better shape, shall we? Would you rather have road repairs or a lightbulb cop?
