Recorded music is what ruins the atmosphere of NBA games. They play it way to much....

yankeelady 6 years, 4 months ago

KU has many talented musicians. The pep bands are a major part of college sports. The main problem with ours is that the band is so small. Notice on TV , when other bands are shown, how many people get a chance to play. The KU BB band has been steadily shrinking for years.

I've been married twice. I prefer silence. Like at the library.

I'm a diehard NBA fan and I like the recorded music...at NBA games. At college games, bring on a band.

I was watching on TV and her Ozzie. I HATED IT. Thanks, JW for reporting on this aggregious mistake by the KU Athletic Dept. LONG LIVE THE KU BAND AS THE ONLY SOUND OF ALLEN FIELDHOUSE!!!!!

KLATTU 6 years, 4 months ago

I think it sounds much better live. The acoustics of the field house emphasized the tinny, boxed sound of the recorded music. If they want to play metal and techno have the band do it.

Fr. Shawn Tunink 6 years, 4 months ago

I noticed the canned music right away. It was terrible. The KU band does a great job and is part of the tradition of the fieldhouse. This is not the NBA and I like it that way. Bring back the band!

New features at Allen Fieldhouse should enhance and embrace the tradition - like the pre-game video. Pumping in techno or Ozzy's Crazy Train is a really bad idea. Good idea in football pre-game - Bad idea for mid-game basketball.

I will guarantee you that the size of the BB Band has not gotten smaller. If anything, they may look smaller due to the KUAD giving them less room to sit. Years ago, the NCAA only allowed 35 members to be in Basketball Bands. Membership into the KU BB Band is highly competitive and the band can flat bring it.

The crowd did not respond to the recorded music. They sat there in stunned silence. I'm sure it had a lot to do with the dead atmosphere as commented on by Coach Self. Please don't mess with the rich KU tradition. What's next? The Rock Chalk chant?

spoiler alert, can't help myself:

the word is e-g-r-e-g-i-o-u-s, not aggregious.

thank you, lesson over for today.

oh-and the canned music sucks.

Janet Cinelli 6 years, 4 months ago

Trinity, thanks for the spelling lesson. I wrote it quickly without the aid of spell checker. Spelling isn't my strong suit.

I will be more careful next time.

Marchiony is incapable of understanding the meanings of words such as "tradition" and "character". It's only a matter of time before KU-MU basketball games are moved to the Sprint Center. Marchiony would get rid of the band and set fire to tiny Allen Fieldhouse if it would lead to the building of a new arena with an awesome speaker system or playing all home games in Kansas City. More seats=more tickets=more money for people like Marchiony who only like KU basketball because they are paid to pretend to like KU basketball.

The crowd needs to start booing loudly everytime they play some tired, overplayed, garbage recorded song. If real KU fans don't rise up immediately and loudly, fake KU fans like Marchiony will only continue to make things worse.

Wednesday night was a bit awkward. Coach Self even commented that the atmosphere was dead and I agree with him. However, that was not the case at the onset of the game as the Crowd enthusiastically spurred the Jayhawks on to a tremendous lead. I would argue that when the blaring recorded music began, most fans were taken back – questioning what was going on in the Field House. From a root-cause perspective, I would assign a Pareto Principle-based 80% of the blame on the break from tradition we were subjected to via the audio feed music. The other 20% blame would be attributed to the constant bombardment of advertising at almost every time out. It’s hard to stay excited while being pitched. After a phenomenal 10-0 run forces the opponent to “Take a T-OH Baby!” you can feel the wind escape replaced by a collective sigh as the promotional announcements are piped in followed by excerpts of blaring radio cuts. Historically, we’ve had something exciting to carry fan intensity and momentum through the timeout and back into the game. The “Hey Song” (Rock and Roll Part 2) was especially effective at igniting a powder keg of fan frenzied energy. Since being banned, the NFL has now allowed a cover version of the song by the Tube Tops 2000 to be played, and pursuant to legal proceedings, the artist no longer receives royalties – prompting many collegiate teams to return to using the song. I am not alone in hoping that it be returned as a stellar component of Allen Field House Tradition that has been lacking of late. Having the "Hey Song" isn't a solve-all solution, but would be a step in the right direction for keeping the fan fires stoked during time out situations and ensuring the tremendous home court advantage we have in Allen Field House remains intact.

People need to boo and boo loudly tomorrow whenever they play the recorded music.

Send the Athletics department a message: Not in our House!

If the canned music stays, look for more articles about the dropping band enrollment. Why put in the time and effort when you get no respect in your own home?

I remember when college sports used to be for the students! Now its all about the well heeled alumni. The whine & cheese crowd. Wear some earplugs or stay at home, let the kids have their music!

ecseifert 6 years, 4 months ago

As a former member of the KU Band, I can tell you that enrollment is not shrinking, TheOriginalCA had it right; ATHLETICS shrank the seating 2 or 3 years ago and shoved the band into the corner instead of being the student section. If enrollment in the basketball band shrinks, I fear it will be done by KU Athletics because they HATE not selling the seats that the band takes up.

Canned music is terrible, takes away from the tradition, and mocks the band. It started happening at football games, too. Believe me: several band members were up in arms at what happened last Wednesday. Let's hope KU Athletics takes the hint.

And for the people that say, "It's just music." Are you kidding me?!

kusp8 6 years, 4 months ago

Also, the band members do not receive a stipend, nor does the Marching Jayhawks, but that is for another article. As a former band member I can tell you how frustrating it is waiting for an announcer to slowly make his way through the script and announce 'the smile cam' and not let the band play during a timeout. It was simply infuriating.

??? The band isn't made up of students? I'm sorry, can't have it both ways. Either you are for the students or not.

Does anyone know how to sync up the KU commentators with HD tv. They seem to be 2 or 3 seconds ahead and I really don't care to listen to any of the other commentators.
