Songs from the Encore musical revue

It's again time for Encore, the annual musical revue at Free State High School.
This week's Pulse Podcast features three songs from this year's show - "You Can't Hurry Love," "For the Longest Time" and "Grazing in the Grass" - as well as interviews with choir director Hilary Morton and student performers Erica Collins and Quinn Wasson. Encore opened Thursday night and continues with shows at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday at Free State, 4700 Overland Drive.

Fiddler and composer Diane Gillenwater talks about 'Prairie Glimpses'

Songs about a Ft. Riley ghost, Quantrill's raid on Lawrence and scenes from the plains fill "Prairie Glimpses," a CD with 16 new songs about Kansas and Kansas history.
This week's Pulse Podcast features an interview with Diane Gillenwater, a fiddler and composer who helped produce the new CD. You can also hear three songs off the album.
The CD's songs are performed by musicians from across the state, including Alferd Packer Memorial String Band, Terri Laddusaw and Michael Paull.

Six local bands will gather Friday night at the Bottleneck for a Tom Petty tribute show.
In this week's Pulse Podcast, two musicians from the show - Julia Peterson and Tyler Anderson of the Volunteers - share their thoughts on Tom Petty and play two songs from the show.

KU Jazz Festival and best bets

Gary Foster got his formal music education at Kansas University, and he's played around the world with big-name singers, Hollywood movie scores and popular TV shows.
Foster, who will perform this weekend as part of the KU Jazz Festival, is the focus of this week's Pulse Podcast. He talks about his long career as a Los Angeles studio musician, how the music scene has changed in L.A., and why he would still rather play improv jazz than anything else.
