Janice Meyer, seated at center, and her husband, Gary, right, are pictured with their family at the Calvary Apostolic Church in Salina after receiving the Angels in Adoption Award in this Sept. 6 photo. For their involvement as foster and adoptive parents, the Meyers received the award, which is sponsored by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. The Meyers were among recipients who last month attended an official ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Artist and social activist Keith Haring draws on the sidewalk of Seventh Street in downtown Lawrence during the River City Reunion, which took place Sept. 7-13, 1987. The event brought together beat generation writers, punk bands and social activists.
