Jayhawk Taxi driver Randall Barnes takes a brief break from sitting on his 12-hour shift the night of Jan. 16. Barnes works from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. four nights a week, driving around Lawrence and delivering people to their destinations.
The Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., was a popular place for exercise in January. According to a report released today, Douglas County is the seventh healthiest county in Kansas. The report looked at a number of health factors including access to recreational facilities. The county ranked below the state and national average in this category.

Lawrence artist Hong Chun Zhang works to string cable between two telephone poles as part of an installation in her "China Room" at the Lawrence Arts Center. She says the work deals with her life experience in urban China and the chaotic aspect of its development. Zhang's show, "Hay Wire," opens Jan. 27.
Staff members Letha Nelson, left, and Annette Metz check in on the two dozen or so dogs living at KSDS, an assistance dog training facility in Washington, Kan. The dogs spend about six months at KSDS after about two years living with volunteer puppy raisers across the country.

Brian Daldorph, Lawrence, took a morning run despite cold temperatures earlier this month. Not everyone has Brian's discipline, that's why Lawrence Memorial Hospital is offering a new program this winter that challenges residents to do a variety of health-related things.
