Children runners, wearing aprons and caps, flip pancakes on their frying pans Tuesday as they prepare for the children’s Pancake Race in Olney, England. Olney’s famous race is run every Shrove Tuesday, featuring women who have lived in the town for more than 6 months. Liberal, Kan., started a friendly international competition with Olney in 1950. Liberal’s Cheryl Bevis, 32, won the annual trans-Atlantic pancake race Tuesday, beating the winner of the English leg of the race by 4 seconds. Bevis carried a pancake in a griddle over a 415-yard course in 63 seconds. Olney’s Jane Hughes won the English portion of the race earlier Tuesday with a time of 67 seconds.
