Brad Stevenson, Ottawa, is raising red wiggler worms to produce worm castings and worm castings "tea" to sell at the Lawrence Farmers' Market. The castings and tea are used as a fertilizer for plants.

Marcia McPhail was honored with the 2008 Jayhawk Rotary Teacher of the Year Award on May 15 at Alvamar County Club. McPhail has been an educator for 30 years and has been the librarian for 18 years at South Junior High School.
Volunteers for the 2008 Day of Caring met for breakfast on May 3 at Free State High School. The Roger Hill Volunteer Center, a service of the United Way of Douglas County, organized the annual community event. Over 450 volunteers donated their time and energy to 48 projects throughout Douglas County during National Volunteer Week 2008, April 27-May 3.
