Maple Hill is located between Interstate Highway 70 and the Kansas River, about two miles from each. The town stretches five blocks from east to west and seven blocks from north to south.
Maple Hill's post office is one of the few shops in the town's downtown. The post office, no more than 40 feet wide and 10 feet deep, closes for lunch from 11:30 to 1:30.
Maple Hill Grade School opened in 1952. The town's only school serves children in Kindergarten through fourth grade. The school's principal splits time between this school and another in Alma.
Maple Hill, population 492, is about an hour's drive from Lawrence. Residents were surprised that Kansas House Speaker Melvin Neufeld would compare their "clean" town with no crime to Lawrence.
