The grave marker of Capt. Carr Cary in Chanute's Elmwood Cemetery is typical of many Civil War veterans' tombstones, Jackson said. The tombstone was not a government-issued one and was made out of soft rock, Jackson said. Cary died in 1892 in a horse and buggy accident.
I.N. Wherrett died in February 1910 at the age of 75 and is buried in Erie.
Salem Gleason was a veteran of the War of 1812 and is buried in Lawrence's Oak Hill Cemetery. Though Gleason was not a Civil War veteran, history buff John Jackson said his grave marker was rare. "I've only found three War of 1812 tombstones in Kansas so far," he said.
